Edna's Story

School Following info is for Humes, Bartlett and Germantown Alumni: HUMES ALUMNI: My one regret was: due to several moves by my family, I attended Germantown (9th)& Bartlett High (10th)Schools; so, did not have an opportunity to get as involved at Humes as I would have liked or as close to the students. I did attend Guthrie (8th grade), so knew some of the Humes classmates prior to starting Humes in 11th grade. Also, I was very shy in those days and didn't talk much. Most people who know me now have a hard time believing that. My most embarrassing moment at Humes was being called to the office early in the AM to be asked "where is Billy today?" He was my brother (3 yrs younger) and skipped school a few times! Has our class of 1950 had any reunions? If so, I have not heard. Had really hoped for a 50th. WOW, can you believe it has been that long? BARTLETT ALUMNI: As stated above, I was at Bartlett School in the 10th grade. I was also at Bartlett in the fifth, sixth and seventh grades. At Bartlett, you knew me as Edna Gene Hatton; however, not liking two names, when I started Humes in the 11th grade, I dropped the Gene, so Humes students knew me as just Edna Hatton. To my knowledge, Humes did not have a 50th reunion and I seriously considered attending the Bartlett one for 1950 graduates, but decided that might not be appropriate Would love to have seen many of you. I went to work after high school, married in '51 and divorced in '82. I have a son and a daughter, both live in the Memphis area. I got involved in Republican politics in '70. I served on the Shelby County GOP Steering Committee ten years, including 2 years each as recording secretary and assistant treasurer, & former president of Republican Career Women. I was elected and served two years in the TN House of Representatives in 1991-92. If you would like to know my business background, check my "Work Bio" under FedEx. In my opinion, more than comparable to a college degree. Hope you agree. GERMANTOWN ALUMNI: Since I was at your school in the 9th grade, I will include you. I would love to hear from a...Expand for more
ny or all of you fellow students. Mr. Hurt, principal, went from Germantown to Bartlett the same year I did. Since I was the only student he knew previously, we talked some, so some Bartlett students thought he was a relative. Workplace I retired from FedEx (1996)with seventeen (17) years of service. The first six years I was Admin. Assist. to Craig Bell, Vice President of Sales; the last eleven years, I was in Public Relations, retiring as a sr. public relations specialist. In 1984, I was asked to run the United Way campaign (on loan from Sales)for a four-month period. With a 50% increase in contributions, I recommended to Mr. Smith and Mr. Barksdale that a full time position be created. This was done in 1985 and I applied for the position (along with 105 other applicants). I went into the position in Nov. 1985. I primarily handled the corporate wide United Way campaigns (& served on the National Corp. Leadership Committee, which required interacting with all levels of management, both inside and outside FedEx, up to and including Mr. Smith. In 1984 FedEx was the first Memphis company to donate $1 million (including corporate gift). In 1986 FedEx became the first company in Memphis with an employee campaign contribution of $1 million. And as they say "the rest is history!" While serving on the United Way National Corporate Leadership Committee, a reward system was put into place. FedEx just recently (2003) received the "Spirit of America" award, which is #1! I am so proud to have been a part of this great accomplishment! I also taught an "Effective Speaking" class, worked with the Speakers Bureau and Corporate Contributions. I was elected to the TN State Legislature and served one 2-yr term while working at FedEx. Prior to FedEx, I was fortunate enough to work for former U.S. Senator Bill Brock, former Memphis Mayor Wyeth Chandler, and as membership coordinator with the Memphis Chamber of Commerce. No degree could compensate for the varied work experiences I have had. Also worked for a couple of food brokers, property management and the Phillip Morris Companies.
