Edward's Story

I was born in, and grew up mostly in Bakersfield, CA during the 1940's, 50's & early 60's, except for a half year in Boulder, Colorado at Base Line Jr. High School, when my dad was on a team at the National Bureau of Standards, that invented the process to mass-produce liquid hydrogen for a classified project. Having studied accordion when I was in grammar school, jazz and rock music later became my passion as a teen. At Golden State Jr. High School I expanded my ability to read music and participated in both the Band and Orchestra on all the various percussion instruments. At BHS, I played Tenor Drum in the Driller Band for 3 years, and also performed as a Pit Orchestra musician for the Drama Department (The King and I), and with the Bakersfield Philharmonic Orchestra. As my capabilities continued to grow, it allowed me to perform professionally on drum set for several local groups, such as The Celtics, Kenny and the Ho-Daddies, The Fourth Dimension and The Titans II. After graduation from BHS, I continued my interest in music performance throughout my military and business career, and still play today -- having added Latin Percussion to my repertoire. It has been a long time ago, since I left Bakersfield, CA for the last time...when I was drafted into the Army on Oct. 27, 1966 during the Viet Nam War. I also left behind an ex-wife and a son, John Edward Helton. I was sent to basic training, and was assigned, along with many other guys from home, to Company C-2nd Battalion-1st Training Brigade at Ft. Ord, CA. We were in the 1st Platoon under SFC Robinson (mostly Draftees). Because I accepted a technical school assignment when I entered Basic Training, I incurred an additional year obligation to serve in the Regular Army. When I graduated from Basic Training and left Ft. Ord in January 1967, I went to Radio Repairman School at Ft. Gordon, GA -- and while there, applied for Officer Candidate School. After I graduated from the electronics school, I was placed on OCS Hold. I was assigned to the school initially as an instructor, and subsequently reassigned to assist in the HQ's Company supply room in their preparations for the Battalion's Inspector General (IG) inspections. I received my orders to Field Artillery Officer Candidate School (FAOCS) at Ft. Sill, OK in February of '68 and graduated 8/6/68 as a Second Lieutenant of Field Artillery. After 30 days leave in Oceano, CA (near Pismo Beach) at my parents home, I was sent to South Korea. I spent 13 months there in the 2nd Infantry Division, and then 13 months at Headquarters, Eighth Army (United States Forces Korea) in Seoul. I married for the 2nd time; to a Korean woman I met in South Korea. We had a son, Alan Robert on 11/19/70, who subsequently traveled with us a...Expand for more
s a baby back to Fort Lewis, WA, where I was released from Active Duty as a Captain in August of '71. We moved to Santa Barbara, CA, where I started back to school at the Jr. College, and I also joined the California Army National Guard there in February 1972, eventually accepting command of C Battery, 1-144 FA in Oxnard, CA. I graduated with Honors from SBCC in '72 and then from UCSB, with a BA Degree in Law and Society, in '77. We had another son, Stephen Howard on 10/31/72. The four of us moved to Northridge, CA -- where I started my aviation career, working in General Aviation at Van Nuys Airport in 78. I was promoted in the NG to Major in 78 and got hired into Aerospace at Lockheed (F117) in 1980. I left the National Guard and joined the Army Reserve, where I made LTC in '85. I had left Lockheed in '85 and went to Northrop (B-2) Division, then to McDonnell-Douglas (MD-11) in '90, and then to Teledyne Systems Division in the San Fernando Valley (Milstar) in '92. In '94, I had my final military assignment, when I got a Battalion Command (3-144 Field Artillery) in Van Nuys, CA. I then retired in '96 with 30 years of military service. When Teledyne approached bankruptcy in '94, I changed careers and worked for 2 years as a Private Contractor in the Greater Los Angeles area. Subsequently I spent about 2 years as an executive chasing the dot-com boom, and about 2 years in San Diego working in start-up companies chasing photonics research and manufacturing. At that time, I was divorced again. In 2000, I worked a year stint in Long Beach, CA for Sea Launch Co., launching satellites. I ended up moving to Texas in January of 2001, working initially for another Photonics start-up company in Austin, TX - and then for Raytheon Systems in McKinney, 30 miles north of Dallas, TX - where I ended my business career in June of 2008. I was married for the 3rd time on 5/19/02, to a Mexican woman I had met in Guadalajara. After 8 years, we are getting divorced. Of my three sons by previous marriages, my first son, John Edward died in Bakersfield at the age of 26. The other two boys, from my second marriage, are Alan Robert - 39, who was in the Army for 10 years as an Arabic Linguist and now works in Washington DC; and Stephen Howard - 37, with almost 20 years of service, who is a First Sergeant (E-8) with an Attack Helicopter Company on Active Duty in the Army. At age 65, I think I am pretty well covered for the future, and my faith in God has been the cornerstone of my strength to face and prevail over all adversity that has attempted to come at me. I am still going strong -despite a heart attack 9/29/09, and have started to reconnect with old friends. Thanks for getting in touch...Very best regards, Edward Earl (Fast Eddie) Helton
