Edward's Story

School Attending Center Line schools was a privilege, as they were so highly rated in the 60's and 70's. I had to tow the line because my dad taught at CLHS, but managed to have a lot of fun even under his watchful eye! It seemed like in High School something was always going on, from building the French Club float for the Homecoming parade in 1969 in our driveway, to travel club trips to Toronto, England, Chicago, Philadelphia, among other places, Running for class offices twice (and winning once), clubs, football games, working at Nappy's (remember that place?), crushes on a whole bunch of different girls at different times ( I think you know who you are, even though I was kinda shy in some matters), Big Ed's Joke Magazines, so many memories, so many great teachers. From Mrs. Robbins at Ellis (the epitome,if there ever was one, of what a teacher should be, and a good personal friend in her later years), to Mr. Nicholson at CLHS (the very best assistant principal that ever walked this earth, and a true friend to so many of us), and to so many others that shaped our lives and helped mould our characters, we owe, in addition to our parents, so much. College I loved Central Michigan University, and was fortunate to be able to go with several of my best friends from high school, most of whom are best friends to this day, along with friends made during the college years, 1971 - 1975. If I had four years to re-live again, I'd pick those years, and not change a thing. Studied hard, partied harder, but I think my parents got their money's worth, though. Two years in the dorm (Merrill Hall) and two years off campus in a house owned by one of my more entrepreneurial room-mates were real character builders, and I'm certainly satisfied with the foundation that CMU helped build for my life. I left with a teaching degree, but...Expand for more
found my niche was more in the coroporate world teaching adults rather than with elementary school children. I have nothing but good things to say about CMU, and am pleased that many of my friends' children have opted to attend that great institution. Workplace During college, I worked in all departments at the former Holiday Inn in Warren, which used to be on Van Dyke near 14 Mile. A great experience, and I wonder often what happened to the folks I worked with. After graduation, began a career at Michigan Bell, which became Ameritech, which became SBC ( a progressive slide downhill for the company, its employess, and its customers). Held various management positions in installation and repair, various staff jobs, and Human Resources and Technical Training, from which I retired under a wonderful offer in 2000 after 25 years. It was good timing, as the last 9 years I spent getting on airplanes every week and my best friends were gate agents and hotel desk clerks..and I was soooo sick of the politics and being away from home, and for about the last year, for the first I could ever remember, I felt my department was being run by idiots. I stayed retired for about 8 months, then on a lark went to work in a Farmer Jack grocery store because it looked interesting (it was, but after five months, enough was enough), took another year off until October 2002, and worked part time for a Home Depot, absolutely the best place a person could want to work; they know how to treat their employees and customers, a real breath of fresh air. Spent six months there, will probablly go back someday. I also drive a delivery truck for some friends who own a flower shop when they need extra help, especially on Mother's Day and Valentine's Day(Larry & Donna's on Novi Road in Northville). Real nice little family owned busiess, great people!
