Edward's Story
Life
I retired from the Navy in October 2003, have two sons and 3 grandsons, and am definitely not the same person I was when I left Ohio...or Virginia either. I earned a B.A. degree in Journalism and a M.A. in Broadcast Administration and am now working on a Ph.D. in Mass Communicatons. I have been working at the University of Florida in Gainesville since 2004.
School
I'm sure I remember more people than those that may remember me. I transferred from Buckeye South High School in Ohio to Colonial High School in Orlando in 1978, the end of my junior year. There are quite a few teachers that inspired me: Mr. Graubner, for generating my interest in computers, Mrs. Barco, my Algebra 2 teacher who always encouraged me to do my best, and Mrs. Crawford, my Creative Writing teacher who liked my work and guided me to be a better writer, eventually leading to my degree in Journalism. Algebra 2 was special because of the friends I made there.
College
College was different for me. I was the oldest person in my classes and alth...Expand for more
ough I got along with everyone, I wasn't invited to the inner circles. Running the radio station was a dream come true and the best part of my time at VWC. I learned a lot and helped others learn alot as well. NSU was unique as well. Being a minority was obvious, but I was never treated differently by my classmates and enjoyed my time there.
Workplace
My first job was picking oranges. Right before Spring Break of 1979, I got a job at Disney World where I stayed for almost 3 years at the Plaza Pavilion. It is still the best period of my life. I wish I could get in touch with many of those people to see how we all ended up after some of the things we did.
Military
I spent almost 22 years in the Navy and could never describe everything in one sitting. I made a lot of friends over the years and because it is the Navy, lost contact with many of them as well. Being in the Navy taught me quite a bit in how to be a manager and a leader, but I missed out on too much of my children's growing up, something I'll always regret.
