Edward's Story

To encapsulate ones life in thumbnailed prose fashion most often falls short of the intended goal. So, instead, here are a few SirSpry's factoids : As a youngster I always wanted to be a Minister when I grew up, and in high school I thought that's the life path on which I'd find myself. My family and friends thought that was a fitting idea. As it turns out, they were right. Although, not a Minister, I did teach Sunday School for nearly 40 years, and ran youth groups and activities for them as well. Spending time with young people keeps me youthful. As my silver grey hair attests to, not young in appearance but definitely young in my outlook on things. I have four kids, 2 daughters, a step-daughter, and a step-son. It's funny how even in their 30's and 40's they are still our "kids". Between the four of them I have 7 dogs and only two grandchildren. I keep telling them that before their biological clocks tick ahead or I run out of throw toys, enough dogs, I'd like some more grandchildren. As the song goes,Hunter and Cole, my grandsons, "... light up my life..." After high school, VBHS,can you believe graduation was 45 years ago ? Where was I, oh yeh, after high school I went to ODU for a year, but my love of all things Red-White-&Blue, combined with my academic meandering, and the result was the Army and I made an agreement : I'd enlist, they'd thank me, I'd serve, they'd let me. As things turned out, those were three of the most formative years of my life. Self awareness, bare essential review of myself and what lies at the core of being really important. I was especially taken by the observation that given the chance, kids are kids anywhere. Give them some attention, some safety, a stick or a ball and they define happiness in motion. My high school French came in handy, as any free time I had I spent with the kids in the local village, most of whom spoke Vietnamese, and French, remnants of the time France spent there before us.. Even had several keep in touch when I was back in the U.S. or at least until we withdrew in the early seventies. When I returned to the States, I moved to Long Island to join my wife to be, and enrolled at NYU. Thanks to a fellow officer friend who was in Vietnam with me, I went to work in New York City ...Expand for more
for a worldwide packaging company as a Management trainee. School at night and work by day. Upon graduation, I was promoted and moved around quite a bit. From New York, to New Jersey, to Maryland, to Michigan, brief stays in Texas, Arkansas, and California, then to Connecticut, and 35 years later in Philadelphia at the world headquarters from whence I retired. I continued school at nights, with Degree from St.Thomas Aquinas in Michigan and Sacred Heart in Connecticut. I just love the academic arena. Often thought that if someone would have paid me to go to class I would have taken that job for sure. The first half of my career there I was in accounting and finance, the second half I was a start-up person, and managed various ventures for the company. I loved the travel and the exposure to the different parts of the country. I think my kids are well rounded, outgoing, and balanced as a result of the moving. For their high school years I moved back into the World Headquarters in Connecticut so they would have teen year continuity. Both daughters transfered from UCON to Georgia in their sophmore years, and after graduating, my oldest moved to Florida and my youngest moved to Connecticut. One is a Social Worker and the other is an elementary education teacher. They are wonderful Moms, and are great with the kids who come into their lifes via their respective jobs. I'm now retired, living in Princeton, NJ, a great walk-about college town. When I'm not with my youngest grandson, I enjoy traveling, fishing, reading, and spending time outdoors observing. We live rural, so mother nature always has something to offer. My stepson has several businesses, so my venture management past comes in handy. I like the promoting and customer contact through the restaurants and the Farm Markets he has. Especially the Farm Markets. Grocer Ed replete with apron and advise on veggies and homemade baked goods. Check out kingstonfarmmarket.com. Really quaint-n-country. Well, sorry for the wordy hello. And I apologize for spelling (classmates.com doesn't have spell check [how spoiled we've become]). P.S. - no, I haven't picked up a pair of drumsticks in years. Did have a band in College - " The Ed Tides ", I know, a tad corny and predictable. Regards - mrEd
