Elaine's Story

After leaving high school I registered for classes at Portland State and found a job if you want to call running an elevator at Lipmans a job. I spent two of the most miserable years of my life standing in a shoe box in a black dress, high heeled shoes, and little white gloves. Small wonder I didn't go completely wacko. However there were moments on the job that saved my sanity. There was an express button that blocked stopping on floors and would shoot you straight down eight floors. Sometimes I would close the doors and hit the express key and scream at the top of my lungs till I hit the bottom. It bacame apparent to the other girls to do the same thing and it absolutely terrified the passengers when they heard the sound. If I had a car full of people they would totally freak out and start asking what was happening. I'd just look at them totally dumfounded and say I didn't hear a thing. To be continued. My Yorkie is raising a ruckus downstairs....... well, where was I? Another senior moment hits again. Back to the elevator moments. There were some memorable moments like the time the cables slipped and with a car full of passengers and we plummeted six floors and ended up ...Expand for more
stuck between two floors. This wasn't an unusual event, probably happened more times than I can remember. The Otis Elevator Company was practically living in the building. Enough about my life at Lipmans. I did go through a total transformation while I was there though. I discovered, two things. Designer labels and a total new look. I let my hair grow out and turned into a total fashionista. I spent every penny of my meager pay on clothes, shoes, and handbags. The new me had no trouble meeting and dating to the point of exhaustion. I even dated some old classmates who I'm not going to divulge. My Fridays and Saturday nights were either dates, or girl's night outings. During that time I began modeling for the store fashion shows. I always thought I looked fat so I discoved the art of not eating and ended up a size 2, which I still am. As my hair stylist tells me constantly, you can never be too thin, too rich, or too blonde. During all this chaos I met a wondeful guy and two years later we married. Unfortunately we were way too young. He went to Viet Nam and our marriage was annulled within a year. However we are still in contact with each other. First loves never die.
