Elaine's Story
Life
I met and married my loving husband in 1985, and we have four wonderful boys of whom we are very proud; as of Aug 2007 they are 20, 18, 14, 12. My husband is employed by a west-coast based airline; I work part-time with the county library system, and also for a counseling office. But my full-time job is being a wife and mother, and homeschooling the younger two while the older two attend college. Having had the opportunity to spend so much time with my children has been the most wonderful experience of my life.
School
There were too many cliques in high school to bring about a class camaraderie, which was unfortunate for all. Pockets of people everywhere, but no cohesiveness. There were people I knew since kindergarten, but who never spoke to me even through our Senior year. Too bad. I didn't care much for school, so graduated early and joined the Army in March 1977. If I had to do it over again (and if it were available), I would have done something with much more social opportunity and academic freedom like correspondence school, internet classes, or even homeschool, which has worked out wonderfully well with my own children.
College

ained my Associate's Degree; went to Canal Zone College in Panama, Mt Wachusett College in MA, and then to Pierce College here in Washington. I attended mostly part-time, and finished up just after my first child was born.
Military
I managed to survive Basic Training at Ft McClellan, AL Mar-May77. US Army Intelligence School at Ft Devens, MA was good (Jun77-Mar78). Fort Clayton, Panama was tropic and beautiful, but a difficult duty station, emotionally...and people did too much drinking and too many drugs. Negotiations were going on for the canal (which eventually went back to the Panamanians). I lived for a while in downtown Panama City and often did not feel safe when I traveled in uniform; most locals didn't like us being there. Exhausted emotionally, and realizing I was just not Army material, I got out after serving my three years, in 1980. I performed my duty and completed my goal of serving my country and am PROUD of that. I worked for Civil Service (Dept of Defense) for another 7 years (moved back to Ft Devens in 81, then to Ft Lewis, WA in 84). I was born-again, re-married and quit the workforce to become a mom for the first time in 1987, my greatest achievement.
