Elaine's Story
Life
I actually left Muir in the middle of my junior year and went to Maryland. After that, I went straight to USC as an RHP (Resident Honors Program for High School Seniors). Since I applied to the program while attending Muir, my grades were sent back to Muir at the end of my freshman year at USC and I was able to graduate.
While at USC, I majored in Math and German and was able to spend a year at the University of Vienna in Austria. I returned to USC for a Master's degree in Mathematics. Eventually, I started teaching Math in East LA.
While teaching, I married and had 2 daughters. Jenzi was born in 1981; Kiri in 1985. They are both really fun kids, although they're both adults and pretty much do what they want.
I taught school for 5 years before leaving that field and becoming a software engineer. I've worked in a variety of industries and traveled all over the country. I've performed installations and training from Hawaii to Germany. One job took me to North Carolina where I lived for 5 years. Before that, I was in Arizona.
While in North Carolina, my marriage started to falter and I returned to Arizona. I also got it into my head to look up someone I had met years ago in Austria when I was a student there. He also had just gone through a divorce. It took us awhile to sort things out, but early in 2005, I moved to Austria and we got married.
For almost 2 years, I lived in a teeny village in Upper-Austria about an hour and a half drive from Vienna. My husband Gernot is a country doctor, and I di...Expand for more
d computer consulting for my former employer in Arizona. The nearest city is half hour away which is where we drive if we need more than basics. The local grocery store closes at 5 PM weekdays and isn't open on Sunday.
4 years later, I'm still getting used to speaking German. I make some pretty funny mistakes. For example, I was trying to talk about a tour I wanted to take of Schoenbrunn Palace in Vienna. The German word for tour is Fuehrung. Instead, I used the word Verfuehrung, which means seduction. So, instead of asking Gernot to go on a tour with my daughters, I said that I wanted him to seduce my daughters! It got a hearty laugh, and I was mortified!
But I left Austria at the end of 2006 when my first grandchild was due. We applied for a visa so that Gernot could immigrate, but it was turned down. We appealed the denial, but we're still waiting for an answer.
So, I live in SoCal with my daughter Jenzi, her husband Brian & my granddaughter Jordan. I returned to my job as a teacher so that I would have longer vacations to return to Europe to visit Gernot. It is not ideal. We spend a lot of time on the phone.
When I do return to Europe, I find that I travel extensively. Gernot has real Wanderlust. We spent almost 3 months in India at the end of 2006 and over the past 5 summers, I have spent time in Poland, Hungary, France, Romania, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro (where we had a car accident), Scotland, & Sicily.
I'm now eagerly awaiting the birth of my second grandchild!
So, that's my life so far!
