Elaine's Story
Life
I was married on March 19th of 2005, and my last name is now Walkden. In January of 2008, my husband James and I moved to his home state of Washington. I have a nephew named Stuart, but James and I have no children...and plan on keeping it that way!
School
What can I say? I hated school for the most part, because I felt like an outsider. I did have a very few, very good friends and did enjoy some of my classes. I particularly liked creative writing in 12th grade.
College
I truly enjoyed college because of the studies. As far as "campus life" and the "full college experience", I worked. There was not much partying while I was in school.
Workplace
Work? Well, I've always worked, at least since mid-teenagehood. Began with babysitting like most 13 year old gals do. My first "for taxes" job was as a grocery store cashier at Hudd's Fine Foods. Anyone remember that place?
While obtaining my BA, I worked in retail, as a receptionist, and briefly as a tutor for the UAB TRIO program. While obtaining my MA, I was a "claims examiner" for Guidestar Health Systems. It was a third party administrator company. Basically, I entered data into computerized forms to pay health insurance claims.
My MA is in elementary education. I had to quit my claims examiner job to do my student teaching internship. After graduation, I did not land a teaching...Expand for more
job. Rather, I landed a job as a homeowners claims adjuster at Vesta Insurance group. I have no qualms about saying that place is evil and that I hate it. The job frequently had me going against my personal ethics. That, and due to the overwhelming workload and lousy management, I developed some stress related conditions. After 20 months, in early 2003, I quit without the benefit of another job. Left good pay behind, but some things are not worth the money.
So, it was off to Wal Mart a month later to work for the summer, then off to Adecco temporary agency that fall. Between the years of 2003 and April 2005, I had sporadic, long term temp assignments in the staffing department at Alabama Power. I loved the staffing department and loved working for Alabama Power. Unfortunately, I was never able to get on there permanently. I worked for the Circuit Court of Jefferson County Alabama until my husband and I moved. I am currently searching for work in the judicial systems of Washington.
Have I "progressed" in the world of work? I'm not sure I can say that, but I don't think I'm a "career gal", so it doesn't much matter. :) I like working an 8-5 and leaving my work behind when I go home. I have plenty of time for exercising, learning to cook, surfing the net, trying to become a healthier and stronger person, and spending time with family.
