Elaine's Story
Life
I finally was able to leave home when I was 23. I moved in with my sister, Gail, and we lived together for 2 1/2 years. She and I didn't really get along all that well during the first 2 years, but the last six months we made our peace and have been best friends ever since.
I met my husband, Russell, at Pasco Hernando Community College in Dr. Rom's psychology class. We saw each other for 7 1/2 years off and on. In 1991 Russell invited me to go on vacation with him to the north Georgia mountains with a coworker of his and her husband. Initially I said no, but then changed my mind. After that vacation he and I got serious, married in 5/93 and we had our son 11/95.
I enjoy reading and collecting. I have been collecting comic books since 1973 and attend the MegaCon in Orlando every late winter/early spring and other conventions. I also collect Seminole dolls, shot glasses(I don't drink, but some glasses are so pretty), hand fans, and Swarovski crystal animals.
I used to walk for exercise, but since my son was born, that has been harder to do, so now I use an exercise bike.
College
I did not graduate college. I attended Pasco Hernando Community College for 5 years. The first 2 years were with an academic grant in aid and I was full time. I had gotten a job during my second year and when I started my third, I had to go part time. Trying to go to college full time and work was just too much. I did pass the CLA...Expand for more
ST, but during my last year at PHCC, I was going through some growing pains and didn't pass my last class. If I went back now, besides taking that class again, I would probably have to take the CLAST, too, after all this time. Maybe someday... As it is I'm technically a dropout. I knew that for certain when PHCC sent me a letter/survey asking for my reasons for dropping out. It wasn't that I dropped out, so much as I never got around to going back. I moved after my last semester and I'm a chronic procrastinator. I only went because my mom wanted me to. I'm glad I went, though, because it was a good experience. Also, I got to chose when I went and I had all evening classes. I only had 1 afternoon class. I never had to get up for school. My husband, son, and I are all owls. We don't do mornings if we can avoid it.
Workplace
I have only had 1 job. I have worked for Winn Dixie since 10/84, been at 7 different stores, and done 10 different jobs. The first store I worked at was in Dade City and all the rest in Tampa. I've been a cashier, office cashier, worked deli, bakery, dairy/frozen food, seafood, back door manager and pricing manager(when those 2 people were on vacation), produce(melon bar), and currently I'm a pharmacy technician. Last year WD decided to make certification of techs a requirement (it used to be voluntary and you got a $1 more an hour, but that was before I started). I was certified July, 2003.
