Elaine's Story

Life Elaine Schenk graduated from Catalina High School and from the University of Arizona. I moved from Tucson in l968 with my husband Fred Arm to San Diego California so that he could obtain his law degree. My parents continued to live in Tucson where I returned several times a year to visit my mother who lived there until two years ago. That was the last time I saw Tucson. I currently live in San Diego in a downtown high rise with my current husband. We have been together for the last 23 years. Richard has been in the field of Euducational Reform as a consultant for the National Organization of Year Round Schools Toghether we have five sons; three are from his previos marrage and my two sons are from my first husband. Four of our children live in San Diego. Two of the sons are married and we are expecting our first grandchild. When I moved to San Diego in 68 I started a long career with the San Diego Unified School district. Over the past 34 years I have been a teacher, counselor, vice principal, and principal of the largest school in the district. My current assignment is at the District Office where I am Coordinator of the Leadership Development Academy. My work is to train and develop the administrative leadership of the district. After leaving the University of Arizona I went on to complete my Masters Degree and my...Expand for more
Ph.D. in Clinical Pyschology. The last two years have been very rewarding professionally for me. In 2000 George Bush visited my school to honor the school and me as principal because we were the poorest school in San Diego and yet our achievement ranked first in San Diego and l8th in the State of California. After that year I was awarded the George Jensen Leadership Award for my leadership as a Nation wide expert in Time and Learning. Last month I was selected by Dr. Rod Paige United States Secretary of Education and Arnold Schwartzenegger to attend a Summit in Washington and reception at the White House where seven eduators were acknowleged for their work with After School programs and inner city children. It was the highlight of my career. This year I will work in collaboration with the University of San Diego as a professor and the school system to continue my work with the Leadership program. My husband Richard retired this year as The senior research analyst for the National Center for Time and Learning. For the future, Richard will continue with consulting and I will soon phase out the work I am doing as we wish to travel extensively and to be a part of our children's lives wherever possible. At this time of my life, I am looking forward to reconnecting with the wonderful friends I had in High School!
