Elayne's Story
Life
I have five kids now, triplets plus two. I often thought, when the triplets were babies, that we could make a fortune running a webcam site on our home...but we were too busy to set one up. Yes, it's busy here, but I manage...I think! I am homeschooling the kids, so my life is lessons, diapers, and dishes, 24/7. I don't get any days off from this job, but as they say, it's worth it. I take a couple of nights a week to go skating, I still run my own computer consulting business part-time, and I do a little work for a market research company twice a month, so I get out a bit. I also am active online in the birthing community, run an expert profile at AskExperts, and co-moderate some forums at A Mommy's World.
Right now, I'm stranded in Michigan, desperate to go home to Texas. Michigan has its points, especially in the summer and fall when harvest season comes. But it's just not home, and I really really hate winter up here.
School
How do you pick the best memories? The stories you tell everyone you know later in life?
There's the fire that went off in the hotel I was in during the junior high trip to DC. This crazy Chinese lady comes out of her room yelling, "Fire! Fire! Fire! Fire!" and dashes down the hall with all of her luggage. Meanwhile, I ended up in the parking lot wearing a nightshirt that barely covered my butt because I couldn't grab my clothes fast enough.
There's the trip to Area Choir. I got busted by the cops smoking behind a dumpster at the hotel. But I also met a guy there who ended up introducing me to another guy, who was t...Expand for more
he last guy I dated before I started dating my husband. Or the choir trip to LA, the alcohol that got smuggled off the plane, staying in host homes, Mr. J...
Who could forget the Secret Service getting called during the first week of TAMS? Lots of geeks, lots of toys, very little common sense. But we got away with a lot, didn't we? I know I did. What do you expect with a Director of Residential Life who talks to the squirrels outside her window?
I ended up getting my high school diploma from Little Rock Central High, while we waited for Brian to finish his job training there. I never did finish college. I made a few abortive attempts, but frankly, I haven't needed a degree for anything I've done yet. Not to mention that I haven't been all that impressed with some of the college graduates I and my husband have worked with! It's a piece of paper. When I need it, I'll go get it. In the meantime, I'm busy with life.
Workplace
I've done lots of things. I've been an data entry clerk, an administrative assistant, a garden-variety secretary, a patent and trademark secretary, a network administrator, a computer programmer, a systems engineer, a piano teacher, a singer in a swing band, a professional pianist, a cold caller, an auditor, an Avon lady, a Mary Kay lady, a karaoke DJ, a racetrack bet attendant, and a seamstress. I might have forgotten a couple in there. I still think karaoke DJ was the best job I ever had. You get to watch people make idiots out of themselves, occasionally sing, play with electronic equipment, get free drinks...and you get paid!
