Eleanor's Story
Back in high school I was the long dark haired, skinny, tall ( though not as tall as Corey Shanks ) female jock who lived to play sports, and that alone.
Badminton, volleyball, cross country, field hockey, basketball, track and field... I loved them all and I played them all.
Unfortunately I didn't focus too hard on school and although I managed to squeak by in grade 12 and graduate, I missed out on a lot of opportunities like scholarships.
After high school, I floundered around for a couple years playing club volleyball, softball and partying a lot.
I don't know exactly why, maybe it was because I had an uncle who worked in the finance office there, but I eventually applied for a part-time job at St.Boniface Hospital and it changed my life...
I started out in central supply... I'm talking major grunt work here...like picking bone chips out of the saws used in the operating room and cleaning blood out of hoses.
Most people would have been turned right off...But I was intrigued... and the old career path started to evolve.....Expand for more
. I became a nurses aide, then a physiotherapy technician, then an LPN, then a
Registered nurse, then did the Intensive Care Nursing Course and worked in ICU. Figured why stop there and did my bachelor of nursing degree, started teaching with the University of Manitoba Faculty of Nursing and figured why stop there... so I did a masters. I am currently a full time instructor, teaching third year nursing students their clinical skills course at the Fort Garry Campus and I course lead for the palliative care and mental programs in fourth year. And I figure why stop here....I am doing research projects and considering doing my PhD.
Moral of the story...Don't write off that jock in high school who likes to party and doesn't do well in school... they could end up teaching your kids!
PS I married a guy from Toronto, have a brilliant daughter who has always done well in school and is applying to the Faculty of Medicine next fall, and a son who is a jock ( Hockey Player ) who has never really done all that well at school! Look out world!
