Elena's Story
After graduating from high school, I attended San Fernando Valley State College (before it became CSUN). Met my future husband in a bar (The Oar House in Santa Monica). We married just eleven months later in 1971. Nine days after we married, Jerry was shipped off to Korea (US Army). He spent the first six months of our marriage as an Imjim Scout on the DMZ. Since that time, we've worked and traveled internationally (the continent of Antarctica - McMurdo Station and South Pole Station, and the island of Palau, Micronesia). I have one step-son and one daughter - both grown and married. Most recently my husband worked for the National Science Foundation - Office of Polar Programs (OPP) beginning in 1994 at which time we moved to the Washington D.C. area. He made yearly trips to the South Pole for 4 months during the time he was involved with OPP. Living within 20 miles of our nation's capital was a wonderful experience. stration and subsequently worked in the corporate world for 35 years, most recently with WorldCom. I lost my job after Worldcom's accounting scandal made Enron look like a day in the park. Ergo I went back to school and earned a Master's degree in Education. I taught for 6 years in Virginia (Fairfax County) before retiring and moving back to California in 2009. While we were in the D.C. area we experienced the horror of 9/11 -- we were close enough to the Pentagon to see the smoke. Quite a frightening and sobering experience. Now we own a lovely home in the Naples area of Long Beach and are enjoying our three grandchildren. We have hopes of doing more traveling. I'm super involved in local philanthropic organizations, and I love painting, drawing, and jewellry making. My brothers and sisters live close enough so that we can see them on a regular basis. I read quite a bit -- have a Kindle II -- always looking for book recommendations. If you remember me, send me a note.
