Liz's Story

Life I finally decided to retire from teaching. My journey started over 38 years ago, as a substitute teacher at Edgewood High. I was only 19 years old! The journey finally ended May 29, 2002! Now I am looking forward to getting re-acquainted with some of you guys, traveling, staying with friends and family. I have two daughters, Christa, 29, and Corine, 27. They are both single and have no children; so, I have no grandbabies to spoil. Christa, a Rice graduate, is an engineer, working in Houston. Corine (after much perserverance), graduated from UT Austin with a degree in Botony and a minor in chemistry. She is now busy working with a non-profit organization in Austin called Useful Wild Plants. I got married to Stephen Robbins, who was born in Harrisburg, PA., but grew up in California. We met in Colorado Springs, while on vacation, and he was stationed at Fort Carson. We have been married for 36 years, living on top of a hill, in the middle of 50 acres--just a few miles past Fiesta Texas. Steve has been retired for over 10 years. For the past 7 to 8 years, besides teaching, I had the privilege of sponsoring the Blue Jackets at Lanier and t...Expand for more
he Orange Jackets at Burbank. Sure brought back memories, when I was in the pep squad at Edgewood. Now that I am retired, I will miss the football games, the long bus rides, the half time shows, the parades, the basketball games, cheer and dance summer camps, competitions, the band music, and especially, my students... However, I will never miss the paper work, lesson plans, grading, keeping up with attendance, getting up in the morning and the 70 mile round-trip into town! Stay in touch! Elizabeth (Liz Robbins) Gauna College My years in college were uneventful. I worked during most of my years in college and got married during that time also. My first two years in junior college were the ones I remember the most. My last years in graduate school were my most rewarding. Workplace When I couldn't afford to stay in college, I started to sub at Edgewood Hi. I was 19, and had been in junior college for two years. The district was able to get me a temporary teaching certificate and I continued to teach, and go to school for the next 5 years. In 1971, I finally earned my bachlors and got hired at SAISD where I remained for the next 30 years.
