Elizabeth K.(Libby)'s Story

Life First, my hair is its natural color in the "Now" photo, taken March 2009, and no botox or face lift. Why is that important? Youthful genes from my father's side of the family and very little gray in my hair. Okay, so it's a vanity thing. Please forgive me. :) And the eyeballs went near-sighted at 33. I was born and raised in Terre Haute, IN, the youngest child of three. My father (now deceased) was a fourth generation attorney, and my mother (now deceased) was a homemaker/community activist. My brother Quentin graduated from Wiley High School in 1963 and was lost in Vietnam in 1967 and declared dead nine years later after MIA status. My sister Roberta (Bobbi) is a 1963 graduate of Wiley. She lives in Pennsylvania. I attended Montrose Elementary School (demolished). We moved out of the Woodrow Wilson Junior High School and Wiley High School area, so I then attended Glenn Junior High School (retired), and Gerstmeyer High School, which was, at first, a difficult concept, having been so loyal to Wiley all those years. Turned out to be the best thing that ever happened at that point in my school life. After high school graduation and four years later, I graduated with a B.A. in Political Science (a minor in Journalism) from Indiana University, Bloomington, in May 1973. In November 1973 I married former Gerstmeyer classmate David G. Pitts. We lived in Austin, TX; Royal Oak, MI (outside Detroit); back to Austin, TX; then to Fort Lupton, CO; finally settling in Broomfield, CO, where I've lived for 27 years. We had one son, Quentin David Pitts, born in 1976 in Austin, the second time we lived there, and who is now grown, a college graduate with B.S. degrees in Biology and Mechanical Engineering Technology, and a railroader (certified conductor, but currently working as a car man for a railcar company). Quentin will be married January 8, 2010. David and I were divorced in 1984. In April 1985, I married Mark Schultz, and we've been happily married since. My work life has been quite eclectic (a liberal arts major can do anything). However, I've spent most of it as a documentation specialist/technical writer, editor, and proofreader. as time for a career change, and I enrolled in Front Range Community College in the Urban Horticulture program. After six semesters, I graduated in May 2001 with honors, a 4.0 (never had one of those before), and an Associates of Applied Science Degree in Urban Horticulture. For the first five years, I consulted and created landscape designs. Now I tutor horticulture students. My primary interests include reading, needlework, movies, travel, history, railroads, gardening, nature and conservation, photographing nature, health, and spending time with local friends and visiting my out-of-state relatives and friends. I'm still registered with the Boy Scouts of America, currently serving in a newly created position, Dean of Merit Badge Counselors, for our district advancement committee. Over the past 20 years I have received several BSA awards, including a District Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver, for my work with youth, training adult leaders, and serving as a Unit and Assistant District Commissioner over those 20 years, and I'm a proud Eagle Scout mom. The only application of my Political Science degree has been for the three Eagle-required citizenship merit badges. I'm Wood Badge trained, earned my beads, and am a proud Buffalo. In other volunteer work, I've served as the newsletter editor for the Intermountain Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society in Denver since 1999. That's the extent of my wordsmithing these days, since I changed my career direction! Although my life hasn't been as it was prophecied when I was in high school, it has proved interesting, diverse, and lucky, and I am grateful. I'm one of those who really enjoyed high school. Felt like I was living an "Archie" comic book. My fondest memories are of that wonderful old main building (the smell of linseed oil floors and dirty steam is embedded in my memory) and being in the Gerstmeyer band. What a blast! I certainly enjoyed serving as "The Anvil" school newspaper editor as a senior. And I really liked my high school friends, most of whom, unfortunately, I've lost contact, mostly due to time, distance, and life. So, that's the update to this autobiography as November 2009.
