Defense Intelligence Senior Level, National Security Agency
CURRENT POSITION: Ms. Richards is the Advanced Technology CellÂs Engineering Leader and a member of the Senior Technical Leadership team within the Architecture and Development Group of the Information Technology Directorate at the National Security Agency (NSA), Department of Defense, Fort Meade, Maryland. She heads the effort to explore and foster development of early-stage technologies for integration into the NSA IT architecture and to drive future architectural design and long-term strategies. She is a key figure in creating partnerships with leaders in industry to help address the most challenging technical problems facing NSA.
EDUCATION: Ms. Richards received a Bachelor of Arts degree from The University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana in 1982, where she majored in history and mathematics. She is also a graduate of the School of Engineering and Applied Science at The George Washington University, earning a Master of Science degree in Telecommunications and Computers in 1999. Ms. Richards has completed several Executive Education courses at Columbia UniversityÂs School of Business.
PRIOR POSITIONS: Ms. Richards began work at NSA in 1982 as an Associate Computer Scientist. tion of emerging computing architectures and technologies. She has technical and leadership experience in computer science, cryptanalysis, signals analysis, intelligence analysis and collection management. Her previous roles and assignments include senior watch officer at a field site, division manager for Military Support and Policy, and manager of a large SIGINT Development Division. She completed two tours in Germany for the Department of Defense and two summer tours as a member of the research staff of the Institute for Defense Analyses  one at the Center for Computing Sciences in Bowie, Maryland and the second at the Center for Communications Research in Princeton, New Jersey.
PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND: Prior to joining NSA, Ms. Richards was employed as a programmer/analyst in private industry. She is a graduate of NSAÂs mid-level leadership program, and a member of the Crypto-Mathematics Institute, IEEE, ACM, and American Mensa. Ms. Richards awards include the Meritorious Civilian Service Award and three National Intelligence Meritorious Unit Citations.
PERSONAL: Ms. Richards is a native of Dayton, Ohio and resides in Columbia, Maryland. An internationally accomplished equestrian, she also enjoys skiing, traveling, dancing, music, theatre, and most sports. A non-competitive long-distance runner, Ms. Richards has completed four marathons as a five-year participant in the AIDS Marathon Training program. Through this program, she has helped raise money and awareness for AIDS services in the D.C. metropolitan.
