Ella's Story

Just a quick update to my profile as I haven't been very attentive to Classmates. I was very disappointed to miss the reunion. Unfortunately was called out of province on business and wasn't able to get back in time to attend. It has been a very difficult time in my life these past few months as my husband passed away very suddenly and unexpectedly as a result of a cardiac arrest just prior to Christmas. Big mistake attaching this to my Facebook account! I hadn't updated my profile or provided any grim and nasty details, so Facebook contributed them for me, based on my profile - not sure how I feel about that. Seeing the very stilted and 3rd person statements, I decided I had better put something up. I haven't really seen anyone from good old MAC High except for D'Arcy Hope about 18 years ago in Ft. McMurray when he was Assistant Manager of the Royal Bank there - back in the days that there were still mostly families and there were more schools than liquor stores there. Something that you may not know about me was that I was a professional dog musher for about 12 years - that is I raced sled dogs across Canada and throughout the north. Alaska is truly God's Country! I am married to Nelson Kenneth Mayer. My schools include Archbishop MacDonald High School, U of A, Athabasca University (undergrad) and U of Winnipeg (post grad). Nelson and I have both been involved as volunteers in the Aboriginal Friendship Centre movement for over 30 years and it has taken us many places and allowed us to meet many interesting people. I currently have my dream job (don't know if I will ever retire voluntarily) working with an organization that empowers women and girls in sport, physical activity ...Expand for more
and leadership. One of my favorite athletes include Mohammed Elewonibi. Moe played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and was a great role model overcoming obstacles when he worked with disadvantaged kids - often buying a whole section in the stands (called the "Moe Zone" and distributing the tickets to core area schools to use as incentive awards. Some of my favourite music has been done by my cousin Elizabeth MacInnis. TV shows I like and watch when I can are include Outlander, The Big Bang Theory, Criminal Minds. I have recently returned to Edmonton after many years in Ft. McMurray and Winnipeg - no matter where I go, Edmonton is still home. Interestingly enough, after living out past West Edmonton Mall, we moved back into the Woodcroft area, it just felt right although my kids refer to the area as "wrinkle world". I still look at the homes and think of them as "Karen's house", "Len's house", "Brenda's house", "Bernie's house" - I am sure that you get the picture. My husband an I have 6 kids (3 boys and 3 girls) ranging in age from 39 to 26 and are proud grandparents of 13 - 6 girls and 7 boys. The picture is one of our two new additions - our Siberian Forest kittens Luna and Wicca. Luna is much cuter than my 60 year old mug. Now they have changed the picture to one of me but as I said my kittens are still much cuter than my 60 year old mug. I would like to chat or catch up with other Mac High alumni. We are listed in the phone book (or on-line now I guess or if you are kicking around the old neighbourhood, I work in the Percy Page building on 118 Avenue at Groat Road - the old Alberta Health Care building is now home to most of the provincial sport organizations. Best wishes to all!
