Ellen's Story

Today is July 3rd, 2009. And here is the readers digest peek into my life. During the 11th and 12th grade I dated and after graduation, became engaged to Will Wilcox, who grew up across the street from me on Foxpoint Lane. After Will's death and and that of our friends Rick and Skip,in 1974, I really did not stay in touch with many friends from school. Life was in session. I was running. At the time of graduation I had a great job (through job training) working for a dental firm and in forensic dentistry. I met and later married Terry Voorhees (a '67 RHHS Alumni) who grew up on the the same street as me and Will - Foxpoint Lane. During our marriage continued part time in dentristry and landed a fabulous job at Nissan Motor Corp., USA in Advertising and Sales Promotion. During our 8 years together we had a daughter, Mariah, married and now 30 is a Social Worker for Adult Protective Services. She has a son 6 and daughter 10. Thank God for the great job and health benefits, as my husband Terry died from a 3 & 1/2 year battle with cancer two months before Mariah's 5th birthday.. The book gets crazier...Those of us who grew up on Foxpoint Lane have remained very close friends to this day. But at eh end of 1983 I went out to lunch with a mutual friend of Willy and Terry), Brian Campbell, who grew up next door to Terry, on Foxpoint Lane and well....I have been out to lunch for 25 years. I know what you are thinking....I single handled ly wiped out Foxpot Lane...Gosh it felt like it. We moved to Bullhead City, AZ while Brian phased out his law practice in Los Angeles and opened one in Needles, CA, where we now live. Brian and I went on to have 5 more children, Shawna is 24 received her BA in Social Work as student of the year from UNLV, Nevada and in presently in her Masters Program at USC for Social Work. She plans to attend Law School after that and she aspires to write social policy for Women's Rights, Immigration Laws, and Homelessness. Shawna and Rodney had their first child, a son age three months now. James 'Corey' is 6'5 and 23. He decided to go back to school and is in his second year at Mohave Community College in AZ. He wants to transfer to a UC in California for his BA and he plans to go to law school. Sheila will be 21 in August and is in her third year at CSULB. Her Major is Early Childhood Development and she plans to get her Masters in Social Work. My son John will be 20 in October and he is 6'4. Skinny as a stick. He contracted spinal menegitis at 9 months and again at 10 months old, suffered severe brain damage and he is the light of our hearts. He learned to walk again at three, spoke at seven and first sentence at nine. I almost dropped dead. He has taught us patience, perseverence, tenacity, love and given us so many dreams and hopes. He has helped make our family what it is today, and I think he heavily influenced his siblings in their chosen paths. He functions at about the 4th grade level educationally. Emotionally - that is a spreadsheet. He has started noticing girls...OH GOD. He can He...Expand for more
can play PS3, XBOX, or Wii like no body's business. He has a heart of gold and a great sense of humor. He has given me Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny for the rest of my life. Our baby, Kevin is 14 and 6'1. He loves basketball, skateboards driving his "Burbie Doll" (a not so pretty older 4 wheel drive Suburan) around the desert and driving his mother nuts. He is so thrilled to be so much taller than me now and his voice has changed. It is the strangest feeling to have my baby going to high school. Thank God I can not have more!!! Our girls are so jealous of the boys height, as they are my height (5'7) and shorter. Our unofficially adopted daughter,(she/we adopted each other 18 years ago) Jessica, is 38 and has three children 19, 18 and 16. She is a stay home mom and lives across the street from me. It is fun. We have a nephew that we helped raise and we were given custody of when he was in high school. Anthony is 23 and is going back to school next sememster. Since 1999, we have had the privledge of four foreign exchange students for one year each. Naiara from Bilbao, Spain. She has been here 5 times now. Pablo is Naiara's brother and he came for three summers and he will be here in 13 days (woohoo)to stay for one month. Alejandra came from Castellon, Spain. Sae, was our last student, and she came from Seoul, South Korea. My daughters have been to Spain twice each to visit their Spanish siblings. The parents of all the Spanish students have been here to visit us. I can not wait until I get another exchange student. Maybe Kevin's sophmore or junior year so he can drive legally. We live in a very small community and that affords you the opportunity to know almost everyone. Our specialty in law has afforded the opportunity to place people in residential treatment for alcohol and drug addiction. We spent so much time doing this, that we branched out to helping the community at large, ironically through law enforcement giving out my number. Yes...I am in recovery. When we placed someone, we took in their children until they completed residential treatment. Our children helped those children transition and to learn to be a family. I feel this has influenced our childrens decisions for education also. As for me, I have retired from 21 years of being a paralegal, specializing in personal injury. I still work as my husband's administrative assistant in his criminal practice. I still help people find residential treatment and have been extra blessed to be able to travel all over the country sharing experience, strenght and hope to others. Other than some health issues, I am really good. Life, with it its sometimes painful twists, is beautiful and I have so much to be thankful for. What is that old saying...."if I only knew then what I know now" and the other one I am fond of is W.C.Fields "the trouble with youth is it is wasted on the young" Wow. As for regrets, ... I wish I had stayed in touch with friends better. I am trying to rectify that. I often think "I wonder what ever happened to....?" Best wishes.
