Ellen's Story

Life I currently live in Indianapolis, where I relocated in 1995 to be with a man I ended up marrying in 1996. It was a good move for me because not only do I have a wonderful husband, Stephan, but am enjoying a rewarding career teaching voice at Earlham College and privately as well as performing actively. I sing opera, baroque music, and just about anything else people pay me to sing. I miss North Carolina, but I manage to get there a couple times a year to visit my parents and sister. I also travel frequently with my husband to his native Switzerland, as well as to our new favorite relaxing spot, Jamaica! I have two retired cats, Athena and Varda, who spend most of their days sleeping or ordering me around. When I'm not doing something musical I am often writing. I have a few things published here and there online and in obscure magazines if you look hard enough for them. I wrote an original story for a 'fantasy dance adventure', The Willow Maiden, which was performed at Butler University in April of 2003. Since then I have been working on a novel of the same story. In 2006, I attended the Odyssey Writing Workshop in New Hampshire. I have a livejournal which is mostly about writing and my user name there is ellen_denham. of things and enjoyed most of my classes. It was fun to commute to the Career Center for AP and meet people from other schools in the county. I was lucky to have mostly good teachers, with a couple notable exceptions. I had some great friends, most of whom I haven't really kept in touch with. Oh well! Such is life! College North Carolina School of the Arts was a good choice for me because it allowed me to immerse myself in music. It was one of the few places I could walk around singing under my breath and nobody thought I was weird! Having grown up in Winston-Salem, though, I was really ready to move on to another place, so I pushed myself to graduate in three years to go on to grad school at New England Conservatory. Workplace I have multiple work environments, which keeps me from getting bored. I teach voice at a small liberal arts college which I really enjoy - if I had gone that route insted of the conservatory approach I would have wanted to go to a school like Earlham. I also teach voice privately in Indianapolis, and perform frequently in operas and concerts as well as doing gigs at churches and temples. The newest part of my career is writing and dramaturgy. Though I have always loved to write I had never considered it a career. But I've been writing much more lately and received a grant for my work on writing a libretto (plot) for a new fantasy ballet. I have also written non-fiction articles for classical music magazines.
