Ellen's Story

It's been a very long time since high school. I went to what is now Binghamton University (Harpur College back then), majored in theater, and got into radio. I was a DJ in Binghamton and then Santa Fe, NM where I moved after packing a van and traveling all over the country with my then boyfriend. I was there for 27 years. I started skiing in 1974 and although it was not easy for me, I persisted. I became a ski instructor in 1980 at Santa Fe Ski Basin and I've been teaching skiing ever since. Weird thing for a girl from Brooklyn who didn't understand what skiing was. I stopped along the way to get a masters in counseling psychology, but teaching skiing was always my passion. I eventually met and married a man who worked in the movie business ...Expand for more
(two emmy awards as a sound mixer) and he insisted I move to California. I wound up in South Lake Tahoe, where I am now. My husband died in 2009, and in 2014 I met a man with a 5 year old son, so while most people are being grandparents, I am a step parent to a now 10 year old boy. He is the love of my life - smart, funny, loads of personality and adorable. I now work at Heavenly Ski Resort, where I was the most requested instructor for 7 years and my manager put me in Ski Magazine's Top 100 Instructors in 2003, my first year working there. Not bad for someone who was absolutely terrified of skiing and took 6 first time beginner lessons and 3 years before I could ride a chair lift without screaming. I feel very far removed from Brooklyn and FDR.
