Ellen's Story

Life Hey Everyone, Here it is in a nutshell. The last 24 years. Attended college Fresno State University. Over 10 years experience as a buyer for large office supply company, 3 years as co-manager of an 84 Lumber and owner of a mid sized printing company for 7 years. I married my best friend Richard in January 1991. In 1993, while stationed in Germany, we had our twin sons, Zack and Tim. We moved to Kentucky and then to Georgia with the military. Within months of moving to Georgia my husband passed away from a “service connected illness” (from Desert Storm), he was 30 years old and the twins were four. We have never moved from this last duty station; Church, Family, Community, this is what we have in the town we call home. For seven years my printing company almost became a second home to the boys. I took the company from a 1 man 700 sq ft store front to a 7 man 5000+ square foot facility, most of that growth occurred during the first 2 years. Four of those years were spent home schooling my children in a back office. Unfortunately you cannot be all things to all people and my health declined. I closed my shop 3 years ago, my health has returned and I have returned to school too work on my Masters (education this time) My life as it stands now is school, work from home as a print media consultant. Over the years I have become a self taught expert in several fields. I was mistaken for a trained nurse during my husband’s illness, I taught myself to become quite a good teacher, and I am well skilled in all forms of print media; from concept and sales, to design and production. But if one is to ask me what job I enjoyed the most, I would have to say, “Being Mom.” You see, Tim is what they classified as “severely” Autistic and Zack has Aspergers. God blessed me with two unique...Expand for more
special children and through them I discovered patience, understanding and my love of teaching. Schools in our area offered little or no hope for my children’s future, condemning them to be dependent for life. Unwilling to waste the next 12 years fighting for my children’s education, I choose to do it myself. Zack is 15 now and will start high school next week. We are still homeschooling and he is awesome. State standarized test were "a joke" for him, scoreing near perfect in science. So much for public school wanting to ship him off to special ed. NOT Our educational system wanted me to institutionalize Timothy, telling me he would probably never even learn to speak and dress himself, let alone learn the 3 R’s. They were of course wrong; He is still working in 4th and 5th grade curriculum but his math is 3rd grade now and he communicates very well verbally. He is now homeschooled again simply because the 150 mile round trip everyday to get him to the wonderful school he was in for autistic children has become financially to much of a burden. However he AND I are thrilled to be working together again on schoolwork and projects. I am engaged to a wonderful man Scott, that I have known for almost 10 years now. No we have no plans to marry soon. I just wear "my shut up ring" and am perfectly fine with that. He treats me very well and he has been supportive of my business and homeschooling for years. Nothing like getting involved with a "good friend". Makes for a great relationship. LOL All my friends have been supportive in my returning to school, and as a single parent, without their support it would be impossible. So there it is. Not what I had expected to do with my life. LOL My life is so much more!!!! Hope to catch up with old friends. God Bless, Ellen
