Ellen's Story

Life hmmm, suffice it to say i graduated with a BA from Mich State Univ. then after attending Aquinas College's art school, i later was hired by the Univ. of Mich and worked 23 years there, 21 as an administrator in the Business School. it was a tremendously exciting and stimulating, environment and my job developed into two distinct areas -- the School Registrar and the Associate Director of various academic programs (joint or dual degree programs, the international exchange program, and others. i ended up with a staff of 3 to help accomplish all of our goals, most of which had steady deadlines throughout the school year. and i was gone once or twice a year to all over Europe, British Colombia, Brazil to meet with our partner schools in the exchange program. not a bad perk at all! and all those wolverine football games, i kept the same seats all 23 years i worked at UM - at the UM vs MSU games I cheered for whoever made a good play, driving the Michigan people around me nuts. as probably some of you might have had experience or seen, when new management took over our office, 18 of the 20 regular staff either left or were forced out. we were deemed unable to suddenly do our jobs. i left for a brief stint at the Business School at Cornell Univ at Ithaca, New York. i returned to Ann Arbor, and commenced serious job hunting. to make a long story short i met a man on the internet and after 8 months talking and writing to each other there, we decided to meet. and that's how i've ended up in NW Texas, married and finding life after the fast lane has some really great rewards. Quenitn is the business manager for a local union during the day and farms and raises cattle on the side. the "side" sometimes takes a lot of time! We just hauled 3 loads of cows and their calves yesterday. tonight we checked on them and the deer feeders, two unlucky racoons had been trapped. i was in tears the first time i saw Quentin and h...Expand for more
is son butcher a deer, but life is different here. at least half of our diet consists of wild game and home grown veggies and fruit. since i've been here deer, dove, quail , wild turkey and wild hogs are things i've tried. also, goat. had the unfortunate experience of having a stroke 9 months after i arrived, but you can't really tell it. i have for all practical purposes recovered. this last summer i painted all the interior walls of Quentin's house before we got married. (we had to wait so long so that the catholic church could annul our first marriages - in the meantime we got to know each other better) i had CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in the 90's - something i still have cope with on occasion. it seems i'm always getting something, right now it's a foot problem and i will be having a breast biopsy next week. i may have to edit this later, i'm tired and hungry! There's not much more to add, except when I married I became not only a wife, but a mother and grandmother! I have 3 step children and 4 grandkids. To make it even more overwhelming, Quentin has 2 brothers and 6 sisters!! I married into a large family, a loving family. It's just all those birthday dates to remember, I've got all his sibs but not all the spouses yet. I don't know yet whether I'll make to this year's reunion, the 45th! Airfares have gone up significantly and I'll be going to New Mexico this fall... Well, hello everyone who reads this...thanks for stopping by! Another update: I AM planning on going to our 45th reunion on August 21, the airfares actually went down! Also, Quentin has retired from the union's business manager and now just farms his own land, which comprises mostly of a small herd of cattle. Currently we have 15 calves and 14 momma cows ( one of the momma's died shortly after childbirth and we are currently hand feeding the calf at the house!) LIfe is sure different from where I grew up! See you at the reunion!
