Ellen Colleen's Story
I became a teacher after graduating from UNT in 1969 with a BA in Latin and English.
I taught English and Latin at Hillcrest for 2 years. Then I was force-transferred to Pinkston in the bus fiasco. Then the evening before school started, I received a registered letter saying I had been transferred to W. T. White. I went in as an English teacher, but at Christmas of that year(1971) the Latin teacher at White died, and I stepped into a full Latin program, Latin I-V for the next 8 years. e been there for 31 more years. I retired in 2008 and now only teach 3 Latin classes a day as a half-time teacher. Most days I really believe that 41 years is too long for anyone to teach teenagers.
I remarried in 1985 after re-meeting Jimmie Webb at our 20th Samuell Reunion. We will celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary on July 20. We have 9 grandchildren to enjoy.
I fully retired from teaching in 2011 after 42 years of working with teenagers. I planned to become a teacher from early childhood. I taught my dolls and stuffed animals daily and then began on the kids in my neighborhood, usually working with one or two at a time. I really did get to enjoy the thrill of seeing teenagers finally understand many
difficult concepts as well as see how much the accomplishment of learning did for them personally.
