Ellinore's Story

Life Seems the most of my life I remember as a single mother. I worked at so many different things trying to edge out "man's workaday world", worked 2 and three jobs, put myself through college at night. Cocktail waitress, gopher, secretary, window decorator, dancer, real estate agent, stock broker, legal secretary, paralegal, office manager, daycare nursery, medical assistant, freelance artist, writer, art teacher, equal opportunity specialist for the government, civil rights violation investigator for the government, White House appointee in a cabinet committee.a few less memorable jobs (not necessarily in the above order) and now an English teacher. Rearing 5 children alone, you work where and when you can, and so I did. I retired early figured I could get 3 extra years out of SS that would pay for the few bucks less, and went to Spain. From Spain to China, where I taught English for 7 years. It was a real adventure and I would suggest it to anyone bored with retirement, or just not finding your knick, or need a break. I have my frustrations and my blogs let off steam, but overall, I was content, and lived quite well considering I couldn't live half so well on ss in the states. So if you want information relating to a free trip to China, free room and board, and some really interesting adventure..everyday was an adventure. I have lived as far off as Xinjiang, which is the largest and farthest province in China. It is an autononymous region primarily of Uyghur minority people..they are not Chinese, more like Turkish. I have learned so much about this place, so different than what we in the west ever learned. Shanghai for three years and then Beijing as it readied itself for the Olympics.. WINDING IT UP IN CHINA: After 7 years, I decided to go back to the states and see if I can make it. The older I get the harder it is to live here in China. I really have enjoyed the adventure as you could tell from above, but when it gets right down to it, although they rejoined the world, their culture, superstitions and traditions clog their logic. They believe and do things that defy physics, logic and modern medicine. My tolerance level for stupidity, which I grant you is the result of the above, is getting lower each day. One on one these are great friends but in mass, they are nearly intolerable. Everything is chaotic. They make the simplest thing difficult by added unnecessary complexities. A cold sends them to the hospital where they take a 2 hour IV of antibiotics and sugar water and when you laugh, 8 days later tell you it works..I have had a lot of great laughs, usually a couple weeks after an angry or frustrating experience. Now I wait two weeks to see if it gets funny before I get angry..Anyway, I miss it and the truly wonderful friends I made, but homeward bound I am. Hope to see you all at the next reunion. 05/05/08 UPDATE: July 2008 - everything comes 'round so they say. I bought an apartment here in Florida but the job offers in China keep pouring in. I am wanted back, and in the desperation that only sheer boredom brings, I am actually considering it. Will keep you posted. Oct.08, It looks like I am ending my colorful if not questionable career working at Walmart. What a hoot. It is the most cultural shock I have experienced in my life. Not sure it will last as it is exhausting. Just trying to figure out a simpler way to earn a living. May 2009 This month has brought me great anguish. My beautiful son has passed away. One of those deaths that did not have to happen. He was the oldest and missed by all of us tremendously. I can't even imagine life without him. He was one of those larger than life human beings. Plus he was one of the most handsome men you could find. His tribute is on youtube, keywords, peggyaldinger. You can also view his memory card on my photos. Now I am determined to live a little more fuller and quit that damn Walmart...it did give him a laugh. July, 2009, to add to the anquish, the coroner could not get a resulting reason for Michael's death, but meantime we have been informed that the two medicines he was taking for his heart have been recalled. I have to admit it does somewhat redirect my anger, but does not quiet it. I am preparing to go to California in September for the reunion, and if absolutely forced, the cruise at which time I will deal with the legal ramifications that the news has instigated. Meantime I am plugging a way at the career ahem, ahem, at Walmart. I have been there long enough to get medical, so that alone might be enough to keep me. who knows, I might just climb the ladder of success. ahem, ahem, ahem...I can take my tongue out of my cheek now. As life "turns", my husband of long standing, and even longer separation, is suffering from 3rd stage cancer. While we have been separated we have remained friends, so as legally still married, I feel...Expand for more
a strong pull to be there during this time, so immediately after my reunion and "ugh" cruise, I shall go to Detroit (ugh, ugh) and see if I can do anything to make it better for him. I don't think he is so anxious to have company, but men are that way, totally underplaying the seriousness of his illness. Not much to add other than I did manage to shake Walmart loose. Went to the reunion, too many sick old people there, depressing...saw my high school sweetie which was nice, bought a car, went on a cruise (it amazes me that people actually like those) and drove back with my daughtr in my new old car. Now I am waiting for life to happen so I can move on to the next thing. October, 2011 - A lot has transpired since I last added, Soon after my last entry, Russell, my husband passed away. My former brother-in-law (from my first marriage)Captain Bobby also. I guess at our ages we need to steel ourselves as those with us all our lives, leave us. I have moved from my condo to a house in Boynton Beach. I have added a dog, Pepper, and my cat from the Condo, He Niao. It is time for another reunion. I hope this one is more pleasant than the last disappointing one. It promises to be so with professional catering in a real restaurant where if nothing else I can at least drink..., March 19, 2013: I see that it has been over a year since I last put things up to date. Almost like a black hole.. Not that I haven't been breathing, just not much changed in all this time. One day just dragged into the next. I did realize though as I contemplated all the crap I have managed to collect in the 4 short years I have been back to the State, that I have now exceeded my time in any one place. In this time, I have had a couple of visits from friends from China, and friends from Spain and France, and our classmate Ed Gaul came and stayed a few days. Also my brother came and visited for awhile. It was great having them all here. I would hope that before I unload this Florida place, they all come back, but I am so ready to move on. My feet are restless. Taking out one's mental bucket list helps...OMG what is still there, so much...on the top is the Santiago de Compostella, so as it keeps landing in my lap, coming from totally unexpected places, I am putting my walk together. This week I went to the American Pilgrimage Gathering in Santa Barbara and go jolted into action. My plan is to go in June and only do the minimum.. I will fly or train into Santiago, bus back to a do-able walking place and walk back. Minimum is 110 km...hell, I lived further from town than that. Giving myself all the time in the world, I figure I can tour, walk and enjoy for about 7-10 days. If it works I will then plan on a longer one sometime later. Now all I have to do is make serious with my training, a bit of leg surgery, pack up and go. If unable to heal enough by June, I will go no later than September. You all are welcome to go with me. My granddaughter and youngest daughter want to go, but we all know how that goes. I will most likely go alone. While in Santa Barbara I had time to spend with my grandson, his wife and my first and only great grand daughter 6 months old. Bien Camino to you all. I will post some pictures of course. UPDATE June 16, 2014 I am now back from Camino de Santiago. It was a great but exhausting trip. Although the walk was horrendous for someone my age and condition, I do believe the travel was worse. I flew into Madrid, took the train to Santiago, a bus to Lugo, a bus to Sarria, from where I started. Completed on May 28, I then flew to Barcelona, to Rome, and few days wonderful rest with friends in Italy, then back to Rome, to Madrid and home. Exhausting travel between buses to trains, trains to buses, to planes, to trains to buses... It isn't easy getting from one European city to the next. Naturally the terminal or airport I come in at, is not the one the plane I must transfer to is at...If anyone gets an Italian public phone, please explain to me. I spent 8 euros to never get a number, but always got..insufficient funds and then arreviderci, graci....aagggghhhh....naturally when you need it the most your mobil goes out and there is no wifi anywhere near... You can get pictures on Facebook Terri Adams I will post some here later when I get them straightened out. Anyone wanting specifics will have to ask me direct... 2015 Update: Still hanging in, added a few pieces of art I have managed to finish. I have been busy working on some leather projects and some stuffed dolls for Christmas. I want to get as many done as i can as I hope to return to China late in September. My friend from China, John, is due here this month and I am trying to put all my art, which is spread all over the place, and make room for him and his brother. It is fun showing mainland Chinese our world. They are amazed, as we should be.
