Emily's Story

It took me 10 years to get my BS because I worked my way through college and I changed my major from Music Education/Math to Elementary Education. I also transferred to the University of MD from Livingston College (Rutgers University). I ended up teaching in Washington,DC for 3 years. I left because I was so discouraged with the entire public school system there. The children who needed the most got the least and it was never about the children. After I saw teachers helping students cheat on their standardized tests and other teachers doing nothing to improve their workplace, I left. I ended up moving to Oakland, CA (which I had wanted to do since 1974). My dream was to work with Cesar Chavez's union. Unfortunately, he died of a heart attack my first year and I got involved with a woman and her two kids so I had to put my idealism on hold. I've done many things since leaving teaching; database design, document specialist, clinical research, specimen bank, fundraising, training coordination, meeting planning and capital projects support. Currently I am still providing support for the University of California campuses in the facility, design and construction arena. I have 2 dogs, two cats and am married to a transman. Boring stuff, but a lot of time has transpired between my childhood and now. I have my eyes to the future for a great retirement. I find union organizing the most interesting and am Chief Steward for my union. I also am very active with my husband at the First Unitarian Church of Oakland. I love living in an urban environment and especially love Oakland. I am an Oakland Athletics fan (baseball is a social and civilized sport) and sing (croak) in my church's choir. I continue to be fascinated with Wicca (have been since I was 13) and stopped playing piano and reading tarot cards. I LOVE music - most any kind except Country, easy listening and musak. y I like opera but I have to be in the mood. I used to bicycle like crazy but have slowed down. I'm hoping to pick it up again and also purchase a moped to get around. I haven't owned a car since 1994 and am very proud of that fact. I have always been involved in Oakland, Oakland politics and civic activism. I even was a campaign manager for the City Council, the at large seat candidate (Rebecca Kaplan). She didn't win that year but reran when the seat opened up again and won that time. I have been out as a bisexual/lesbian since 1976 and was married once to a man and now to a transman. I had a very serious relationship with a woman in DC who was a cop and now she is a public defender in Boston. We didn't last because she wasn't out and I refused to have a child (I won't bring a child into this world where we still discriminate, hate and destroy nature). So when I moved to Oakland, I dated women and then met Kristen. He began transitioning around our 2nd year together and is still coping with the fact that he can't have surgery or take hormones due to his medical condition. Despite this, he does identify as a man and works on getting his family to understand it. We both believe it takes a village to raise a child so we are a significant part of our nephew, Leon's life. His mother is single and she lives in Oakland. It couldn't be better than that. My step daughter, Sara, has a child but has cut me out of her life. My step son, Joseph, was killed and the police think it was a case of mistaken identity. He did sell pot but I raised him to be a peacemaker and accepting to all. At his memorial service his friends said that about him over and over. I miss them both. I'm still loud, opinionated and short. That's enough for now. I am now working for the University of California - systemwide office in Facilities, Design & Construction. I look forward to retiring!
