Emma's Story

I am currently retired after 35 years in the advertising industry. I began my advertising career at Leo Burnett where I went from junior copy writer to associate creative director before leaving to go to Soft Sheen Products in 1980 as a marketing manager. I talked Soft Sheen ( a tiny company at the time) into starting an inhouse advertising agency, which I headed up - Brainstorm Communications. Soft Sheen sales went from $800,000 to $33 million in less than a year - and up to $99 million the following year. While I was at Brainstorm Communications, we were approached in 1982 to help with a voter registration campaign. I created and produced the first voter registration campaign that used the electronic media - "Come Alive, October 5," which resulted in the registration of 200,000 new voters. As a result, I was asked to write radio commercials for Harold Washington's Mayoral Campaign. Since then I have freelanced on a number of political campaigns, including Reverend Meeks' senatorial campaign, Rep. Bobby Rush re-election bid and Gov. Rod Blagoevitch's campaign (notice, I'm not saying that too loudly :-) Subsequently Soft Sheen was sold to L'oreal, but I had long gone by that time after being convinced by Tom Burrell to use my writing and ad creative talents for a more versatile mix of products other than haircare. I was at Burrell for 10 years as Vice President/Group Creative Director. In 1993 I left Burrell and mov...Expand for more
ed my ailing mother into my home and began free-lancing from my home. My Mom passed in 1997, and by 1999 I was back into the business, beginning with The Wimbley Group. I left the Wimbley Group (mostly because of the very long drive each morning to Ithaca, Illinois) and began working as Creative Director for RJDale. When my friend and former boss at Leo Burnett, Carol Williams, opened shop in Chicago in 2004, guess who was the first one at her door? I was a creative director there until August, 2008 and am now retired and working on my own projects as well as free-lancing for RJDale, Danielle-Ashley and Black on Black Love. I am working with a couple of producers and an editor (my son, Chip Eberhart) to produce the first Black daytime drama which will be hitting the Internet by late January, and hopefully will be picked up for TV soon. I am also working on a screenplay for a wonderful romantic comedy, writing a memoir for the friend who brought me into the Ameriplan business, and working on a clothing line with a friend who happens to be a dress designer. But I still have time to enjoy my 7 grandchildren, play bid whist occasionally with friends, have breakfast or lunch at Mathers Cafe on 83rd and Wabash, and attend monthly meetings of Hirsch Huskies Class of '60 and '61 at Egg & I Restaurant. I also go line dancing on Thursday's at the Dorchester in Dolton, IL with another Hirschite - remember Donnabeth Thurmond?
