Enrique's Story
School
I Attended PS 147, from Kindergarten to 6th grade. I attended JHS 49 from "64 to "66. In the 8th grade photo above, I am the guy in the extreme right hand, top row, the guy with the glasses, next to Nelson Navarro, and behind Larry Chasin. Those who may recall, remember me as Henry Caro. In my class was my first love, although she didn't know it!!! Hilda Hernandez. This was JHS 49, on Graham Ave., Brooklyn. taken in 1966.
I then attended Aviation HS, Long Island City, NY, but most of my friends attended either Eastern District HS, or Bushwick HS, both in Brooklyn, NY. I should have Graduated 1970, but I took a path less travelled.
In 1971, I enlisted in the US Army, pushed-my-draft. I ended up in England! Probably the best assignment ever. Retired from active duty after a 20 year US Army career (1992). I've travelled to England, Germany, South Korea and moved to Puerto Rico in 1988, to prepare for my retirement in 1991.
In 1994, returned to NYC for my advanced degree and taught in the NYC Public School System for 2 years, at JHS 8, Jaimaica, NY.
Completed AS and BS degrees with NYU, Albany, NY.
Completed Masters Education at St. John's University, Jaimaca, NY 1994
Currently the Director of a private for-profit career vo-tech school in FL. I married and raised two sons and have 2 grandchildren.
It's funny, I have not run into anyone I grew up with, let alone went to school with...and I have been looking! I guesss to validate that I was there, that I existed, that I have a past...
So, if you were a part of my his...Expand for more
tory somewhere, somehow, or know of somebody who was, please drop me a line. My desire is to hear from anyone who either attended school with me or served with me.
The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Reginald Cooper, because he was my blood brother and my best friend. By the way, in the photo above, Reggie is the brother holding up the class sign. To his right is Frederick Kluffer. To his left is Miguel A. Torres, from the projects by Stagg Street.
Others in the photo were: Emilio Roman, Isabel Velez, Irma Lebron, Denise, Diane, Nancy Chon, Alex, Ronald, Margaret Lemons, Francine Meckler, Columbus Hyman and his sister, Dave Rodriguez, Deborah Reeder, Lydia Martinez, Keith, and Gabby. It's weird how you can remember these names off-the-top of your head. My heroes were the Three Stooges, and Superman. As for the class clowns, I guess Reggie, John, Larry and myself could be tagged! What a gang!
I love motor sports, especially drag racing. I love the sound of burning rubber and the smell of smoking tires. I'm a racer at heart.
My passion is listening to salsa, gotta have it soneando all the time.
If I won $100 million, I'd give half of it to help the poor, then spend the rest on me, myself and I and those close to me.
As an update, I resigned my position as Director with Automeca Technical College in Aguadilla, PR after eleven years, to accept a position with Florida Career College, in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida. I moved to Miramar last September 2009 and now work for another school, Dade Medical College.
