Eric's Story
College
I started college right out of High School. I didn't have a clue what I was going to do after High School and my dear friend Bob Smith suggested that I join him at college in the fall. I enrolled in Business Administration Program at Red River and started college in the fall of 1972. I really enjoyed College and it was a great learning experience. I found my niche in Business and did reasonable well. I was hired by Imperial Oil right out of College and they moved me to Edmonton working in the Comptrollers Department. Completed my CMA (Certified Management Accounting Program â night school program) in 1979. Worked with Imperial Oil for a couple of years, moved to Thorne Riddell Chartered Accountants in Edmonton for a few years. Joined Harcourt Matthews Management Consultants and really enjoyed the work. Spent 7 years learning about business. Moved into industry and became the CFO of a number of oilfield companies. Pull one out of bankruptcy. The rol...Expand for more
ler coastal ride of the oil patch and the oil embargo in the early 80's suggested I better find different work. I moved to Vancouver and started working with a merchant banker on the penny stock market. Gain great experience and a developed a lot of contacts. Joined a brokerage / securities firm and rose to the top and became a partner within 12 months. Moved from VP Administration to head of their Corporate Finance Department. Loved the work and did a bunch of deals. This was the place where all my training and experience came together. Continued to learn and grow â straight up learning curve. I was offered a full equity partnership in a medical device start-up in Texas, so I moved my family to San Antonio. Hugely difficult and challenging role of CFO of a fast paced medical device company. We grew the company to $75 million and exited a couple of years ago (Oct 2013). Now Iâm on my second company . . . time will tell how this works out. Stay posted !
