Eric's Story

Retired from Grace Episcopal Church, Cuero, Texas June 30, 2014. Moved back to San Antonio where there is lots to keep me occupied. Joined the Air Force in 1967. 1971 went to Michigan State U. and graduated in 1975. Commissioned a 2nd Lt in the Reserves. Went to seminary in Pennsylvania. Ordained in the Episcopal Church in 1981 and served churches in Florida and Michigan before entering active duty with the Air Force in 1987. I was an Air Force chaplain until retiring from active duty in 2003. Assignments included bases in Montana, California, Korea, Ohio, Arizona and Texas. I was deployed to Diego Garcia and Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War 1990-91 and to Kuwait in 1998. My last assignment was Lackland AFB, Texas where I became a licensed, registered and certified Texan. I was invited to join the staff at Christ Church, San Antonio after retiring from the Air Force in January 2003 and was later assigned to their mission church in Bulverde from 2007 until 2009. The summer of 2009 I was summer chaplain at the U.S. Army Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands. I was the interim rector of St. Andrew's by the Sea Episcopal Church in Port Isabel, Texas for 9 months until June 2011. Rector of Grace Church Cuero from Nov 2011 to Jun 2014. Since then I have assisted at Christ Churc...Expand for more
h in San Antonio and St Matthias in Devine (until 2020). Every summer for the last 8 years I lead the Band and Bible Mission to Uganda where we work with brass bands in three Church of Uganda dioceses. I am a Master Mason as well as a member of the Alzafar Shrine Band, a York Rite Knight Templar, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, Eastern Star and a volunteer with the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls. And I play trumpet in the Beethoven Mannerchor Concert Band. This all keeps me plenty busy. I married Janet Etzwiler in Great Falls, Montana on July 2nd, 1988. We loved the lifestyle of learning having educated our daughters Lily and Charissa and nephew Nathan at home. We called the school the Fenton Organization of Learning (the FOOLs). Nate is in the US Army, Charissa graduated from Houston Baptist University BFA Cinema and New Media Arts, Lily graduated from Texas State and is teaching in San Antonio. My three older children from my marriage to Debra Keene (1974, divorced 1983), Jedidiah is working remodeling homes in Columbus, Ohio, Rebekah who graduated from the University of Massachusetts Lowell with a BS in Mechanical Engineering is working for the Air Force and Arielle who graduated from Michigan State University with a BFA is working in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
