Eric's Story

Attended Columbia College right out of high school. First three semesters were sort of OK. Fourth semester was a disaster of epic proportions. I was granted a voluntary withdrawal. Worked at Beckson Industrial (plastic pump factory in Clinton) for a year. Transferred to UConn Storrs campus effective summer 1982. Majored in sociology. Took a math or statistics course each semester there. Graduated summa cum laude in 1984. Back to struggling - Radio Shack, McDonald's. Ouch. Landed a job as a research assistant at the Pierce Foundation Laboratory (affiliated with Yale) in New Haven. Discovered the joy of computing with an Apple 2e. Turned out I had a knack for programming. Went to night school at Computer Processing Institute (now defunct). The instructor there was impressed. He encouraged me to apply for a programmer trainee position at NASDAQ in Trumbull. Worked there for 7 years. I didn't like the stifling office politics there. Went back to UConn for an MBA in finance. A professor there asked if anyone was a programmer. A former student of his was looking for someone with a background in both programming and finance. Worked at Aetna for 8 years. Tried and failed to start an online business. Got a job at XL Group. Took a break and then back to work at my current employer: Com...Expand for more
munity Health Network. I do the majority of the data architecture work there. I still play guitar! Yes, after all these years I still have the skill. And I still lift weights. I guess some things never change. My serious hobby is the study of self-improvement. Favorite books include Seven Habits of Highly Effective People (Covey) and Man's Search for Meaning (Frankl). I conquered the depression I had from age 17 through 21. I have stayed fit and healthy. I have become far more optimistic than any of you would remember. I suppose another thing that has not changed is my relative poor showing in the relationship department. Never married. That fact never gets me down but I am not particularly proud of it. My independence is leveraged for reading, writing, and keeping my technical skills sharp. I am debt free. I am inspired by minimalism - do not own anything I cannot carry by myself. I am definitely easier to get along with. For the few of you who knew me well, you understand that in my youth I had to cope with my rather negative upbringing (after getting divorced, each parent remarried and got divorced again - shouting matches were the norm at my house). Free of that negativity, I would say I have thrived overall. I want to spread the message of optimism and being productive.
