Eric's Story

Well I'm here now not there in combat. I was going no where with my life after high school. Partying 7 days a week and messing up. Then one day out of the blue I joined the Marine Corps. still to this day I don't know what led me to that branch of service. I enlisted as a private, spent about 6 months in California for training then went over to Japan for a one year overseas deployment. After I picked up rank and was selected for embassy duty. Later I was turned down due to a shortage in my field of duty. I then was stationed at Camp Lejeune NC for the remainder of my Career in the military, but was assigened to the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit. I went on a 6 month deployment to the mediteranian and supported the operations that were going on in Bosnia. I came back home after the deployment to find out I had medical issues and was given the opportunity to reenlist and become my commanders aide in Washington or to leave the Marine Corps and get out. I opted out, but not before becoming a sergeant. I have many awards and accomplishments and very proud of what I have done with my life so far. I worked for Lucent Technologies, USWest, Time Warner Telecom and the US Postal Service where I was a financial supervisor for 3 years. Now I am retired and living my life here in Denver with my wife Mary and our two kids and one on the way. you might want to know how am I retired at my early age. Well to say the least I'm a little different than yo...Expand for more
u normal people. I have PTSD from combat in Bosnia and have other health issues due to some hard corp training. Yes I'm a combat veteran, but never knew I had PTSD. I just got out of a 7 week program for veterans with this disorder and finally able to write a letter like this. After the military I kept to my self and isolated in my booze and other stuff. I wish I would have known more about PTSD when I was discharged. I lived with it for 7 years before getting the help needed. Now that I am retired, we want to get out of the city and move to our property we have in the San Luis Vally. We want to raise horses and other live stock, and I would like to build my own house. We used to live in Highlands Ranch, but didn't like it much because of the covenants and the people. This is my goal for the year though, to get out of the city. Our family all like the outdoors. We have 3 fourwheelers and always go camping with them in our toy hauler trailer. We like to hunt, fish, hike, shoot guns, travel and race (drag race). We have a '70 Nova bad to the bone race car. I will post pictures later and would like to hear from anyone who remembers me. Probably you won't, because I used to have long hair down to the middle of my back and was a stoner/rocker in high school. Those days are over now, but they were the good times. I can go on and on about what I did and what I've seen, where I've gone and where I'm going. Carpe Diem Eric J. Maes Semper FI
