Eric's Story

Life About my sophomore year of High School I had a life changing experience. I was studying late one night at home when I heard a woman somewhere in the neighborhood screaming, “Help me!” I had no idea who the woman was or what exactly was going on; still, I instinctively called the police. The police arrived on the scene to discover that my neighbor’s boyfriend was attempting to stab her to death. While she was badly injured the police managed to arrive in time to save her. A year later I was given the opportunity to testify at the boyfriends trial, where my testimony contributed to his lifetime conviction. have killed again. At the time I didn’t think I had saved the woman’s life; until I discovered that several of my other neighbors had heard the woman screaming and chose to do nothing. I have no aspirations of believing that I’m a hero; but just knowing that I was involved in saving someone’s life is a great feeling. And then at some point I began to wonder, if I could save one life why not two? Ten? One Hundred? What if I could save someone’s life every day? It was then that I knew I wanted to be a doctor. Being given the opportunity to help people, perhaps even save them is one that I would like to be given every day. So I started my medical career volunteering at a local Alzheimer’s center and I’m now training to be a paramedic. With any luck I'll be a doctor some day.
