Eric's Story

So many miles to go.....where to begin. During my dreadful high school years, I was dual enrolled at Dekalb CC. However, I really was not academically prepared and it seemed as if I were spinning my wheels going no where fast. In 1981 I joined the Air Force Reserves and trained to be a Jet Engine Mechanic. Loved it. However, that was short lived because the unit closed down and I was put on inactive status. So, it looked like back to school for me. This time around, I was a bit more driven to excel and move forward. Consequently, I finished at Dekalb CC in 1985 with my AA in Informational Systems and Business Management (yeah, I had that many credits) and I transferred to University of Georgia (GO DAWGS...Woof, Woof, Woof). I finished in 1987 with my BS in Mathematics Education and I taught math for a couple of years then decided to go back to graduate school. However, I also met my wife at UGA and we got married in the summer of 1987. We moved to Tallahassee and I attended Florida State University and received my Masters and Ph.D. in Instructional Systems Design. Shortly afterwards, I started to teach at Troy University, then went to Valdosta State University. However, I tired of the publish or perish mentality in the Ivory Tower World So, I wound up at North Florida Community College and I taught Instructional Technology for a few years. I was a Cisco and Microsoft Certified instructor and loved what I did. However, I developed some health issues (probably from all that liquor I drank at Parkview) and I unfortunately ha...Expand for more
d to find employment closer to Tallahassee, which I dreaded if one knows anything about Tallahassee. I landed a job with Leon County Schools as a Project Manager developing the required state mathematics tests for middle schoolers (FCAT). Did that for a few years and I transferred into the district office and I was the K-12 mathematics supervisor for two years. Of course, I also sidelined as an adjunct professor at FSU and FAMU on the side teaching math or math education courses at the graduate level. After a new superintendent came in, I got my pink slip and wound up teaching mathematics at a private high school in town for some years. However, the school had to "trim down" coupled with getting tired of dealing with parents and lazy students, I left there. After some serious soul searching, while I did make a difference to some as a teacher for some 20 years, it was time to say "adios" to the education profession. So, I went into law enforcement. I had been a Reserve Deputy Sheriff for 16 years and I went full time in 2012. Some people are amazed that with a Ph.D. I am doing law enforcement. However, I love it and I don't have to deal with parents, kids or grading papers anymore!!!!! Unfortunately, all good things must end and I had to take a medical retirement in 2021. It was a good ride. I am still married to the same wonderful woman who puts up with me and I have a 30 year old daughter who is a Marine Biologist for a state agency and loves what she does. I lost my mom 10 years ago and my dad 7 years ago Life is good......
