Eric's Story

The vitals: In a wonderful relationship, happiest I've ever been, no kids this lifetime (except the four legged furry kind). Went to college at UCSB, moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1978 and loved getting to know SF, became a paralegal for two years, took a cablecar to work, and went back to law school at Univ of San Francisco. Passed the bar and worked for others for 14 years before hanging a shingle. Lived in the Bay Area for 28 years, married, divorced, through good and not so good times, and in 2006 moved to Bend, Oregon with my long time partner Linden, a writer and writing coach. I am ECSTATIC living here. Maybe in part it's because I'm finding my fifties really rewarding and enjoyable. But the town of Bend is also part of the reason. Check out visitbend com. I was worried about moving away from the Pacific Ocean (have lived within a few miles of the Ocean since age 15), that I would feel landlocked and depressed. Like many fears, this one proved to be groundless. Bend is a great town of 85,000 people with lots of lakes and rivers, a half hour away from some outstanding skiing/snowboarding at Mt. Bachelor, and tons of all year around outdoor recreation. It's on the east side (the dry side) of the Cascades, high desert at 3600 feet elevation, and gets lots of sunny days per year. The air most of the time is so clear one can see miles, and miles. Hey, if surfing icon Gerry Lopez moved here 15 years ago, you know it can't be that bad. cation and I'm tagging along with her, and best of all, really progressive and open, nice people. We have met many people who have become good friends in such a short time. The older I get, the more I realize how lucky we as a generation have been: lucky to have lived in California/the U.S.; coming of age just after Vietnam (the last combat troops of the United States were pulled out of South Vietnam on 29 March 1973); through the fall of the USSR and the Wall, but before terrorism as we now know it. Moreover, I'm still shocked at how difficult life is in 90% of the world today, and seems to be getting worse. A few stats I just read via Google: Almost half the world, over three billion people, live on less than $2.50 a day. At least 80% of humanity lives on less than $10 a day. And I have anything to complain about? Absurd. Back to my little insular world, I'm practicing law in California doing civil litigation mostly, travel there about every 6 to 8 weeks on average, starting a mediation practice in Bend, and working on a telecommunications opportunity. I'm still in touch on a regular basis with a handful of high school chums, and am endlessly fascinated with other people's life journeys thus far, the twists and turns. It's as if we are all characters in some great Charles Dickens novel. I would love to interview former classmates and put together a book about the class of 1973, the forces that shaped us, and where we are today. If you feel like it get in touch, I would love to hear from you. Best, Eric
