Ernie's Story

Skipping all the history details. Retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard after 37 years. Moved from Great Bridge to South Norfolk to be near our three granddaughters. I babysit the two youngest frequently. Have a lot of projects going, mostly work on this old house. I have a garage shop and have a few projects going on there. I really don't care for living in this area, but will stay around at least until my granddaughters are on their own. Now I'll add a little history. Went to VPI&SU for one school year. Lost my mind and flunked out. Got in some trouble as a result of drinking too much beer and doing stupid stuff. I worked at a gas station for a while. Then I got a job as timekeeper for the contractor building the new Indian River High School (also Western Branch). Ran into my future wife as she went to IRHS. We'd met before so it was renewing a friendship. Got a job as maintenance mechanic at Old Dominion Uniform Service. Got married in '73. We had o...Expand for more
ur son in '74 and I got an apprenticeship in the Navy Yard. Got smashed up in a motorcycle wreck in '76 and also got divorced. Got custody of my son around '78. Bought first house. Lived there until '83. Bought house in Great Bridge in '85 so my son could got to GBHS. He finally graduated in '94 after quitting for a while then going back. Remarried my wife that same year. We moved to a really nice house in Great Bridge in 2001. Turned out I wasn't happy living in a higher-class neighborhood. People weren't friendly and some of their kids were utterly out of control. And imagine a family behind you setting up a dirt bike track in their small backyard. We got out of there in 2007, moving to our current home in South Norfolk. As you might expect the neighborhood isn't that great. A lot of the neglect and other problems around here are simply because the city of Chesapeake does the bare minimum they can get by with. I could go on but I'll save it for now.
