Ernestina's Story

After graduating from high school I had several different jobs in which I met many interesting people and created some long standing friendships. I was a single mother for many years and then I tried marriage but it didn't work (I guess I was just too use to being independent) but I will say that the one thing I don't regret is the birth of my son. I have a son who is turning 35 in June and he is great. He graduated from Southwest High School in 1993 and was working for Target but quit in order to take care of my brother who had a stroke in 1995- it was a bad year for us because in April we lost my mom, in August my brother-in-law left my sister and in October my oldest brother (who lived with my sister) had a stroke so in December of 1995 when he was released from the hospital my son and I moved in with my sister...Expand for more
so that my son could take care of him while my sister and I were at work. He also took care of his grandfather at the same time, taking him to the doctor, to the store, etc. Now you see why I say I was blessed with a great son! Now he works full-time at one of the Habitat Home Centers and he loves his job. As for me I worked for 26 1/2 years at USAA until I retired in August of 2006. I would have stayed there until this year to make it an even 30 years but we got a new boss and needless to say it was my health or my job and since I figured I was able to retire (even though it would be rough for a while- money-wise I chose my health). Today things are much better. I still get up early to pack my son's lunch and take him and my sister to work and I thought about going back to work but my son doesn't want me to.
