Ernesto's Story
Life
All in all, I am very pleased and content with the way things have turned out... the bumps in the road have kept things interesting, even though I didn't think so at the time.
My Job
Supply paint to large commercial painting contractors in the greater L.A. area.
I find that the fact that I ended up being in the paint business to be a little ironic as some of my fondest work related memories were working for a couple of painting contractors before leaving Barstow.
School
Biggest crush???.....way too many to list! ! ! As far as teachers that were most inspirational??? Would have to be Mr. Harris the History Teacher: good lecturer, funny, commanded respect with a touch of fear, and made me feel like pushing myself.
Funniest, happiest, and craziest times in high school had to be all the shenanigans that went on in band: smack talking, horrific pranks/insults/practical jokes, outrageous classroom and bus behavior.
College
Leaving home and turned loose with no supervision was quite an experience... Thank God I survived it.... it certainy could have gone very bad! !
Hmmmm, every one of my college roomates were unique in their own way: nerds, poindexters, party animals, brainiacs, surfers, mixed in with some pretty cool people. As far as the cafeteria cuisine....I suddenly realized that mom's cooking was pretty damn good! ! !
Not too many caffeine-fueled all nighters to turn in a paper, but many late nighters fueled by other things in search of a good time.
Overall, the college experience...Expand for more
made it very clear that the world outside of Barstow was pretty big, exciting, fun, entertaining, dangerous, scary at times, but worth exploring and enjoying. And, if I had to do it all over again...I would have studied more, been more disciplined, not been so reckless and stubborn, sought out more advice and acted on that advice from qualified people....in short, not been such a knucklehead! ! !
Workplace
My first job after FINALLY finishing college was working for Goodyear..first as an inside salesman, then as a store manager. The inside sales job was by far the most fun and entertaining job that I have had in my working life (because of my co workers in general and one in particular, who was a major influence in my life until his passing a few years ago). The Store Manager's job was a disaster.
After Goodyear, I was a receiving manager for Target briefly, and that was a miserable job. Equally as miserable as the Goodyear Store Manager's job, but in a different way.
On the advice of a former colleague from Goodyear, I got a job with Sherwin-Williams Paint. He told me that compared to the abuse and madness of Goodyear, Sherwin-Williams was like a walk in the park; 17 years later, I would have to say that he was right.
My career has, for the most part, gone according to plan and been very fulfilling. Of course the plan has changed since I got my first job.
As far as a dream job....anything that pays more, for less hours, less stress, and less attitude and b.s. from co-workers and customers.
