Ernie's Story

I was the pulpit minister for Lake Shore Drive Church of Christ in Waco, Texas from 1985 until I retired in 2013. I am still associated with the congregation but in a lesser role. I preach from time to time when our preacher is out of town, and I teach a Bible class each quarter. In addition I am a volunteer chaplain at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center and Ascension Providence Medical Center through Lifeline Chaplaincy which originated at M.D Anderson in Houston. My wife and I have two children and their spouses and five grandchildren. I love this business of being Papa. I am still trying to grow old gracefully. The growing old is easy. If you live long enough, that happens naturally. It is the graceful part which I am working on diligently. I will post some random things about me which will give a snapshot of my life. 1. I was born and raised in Pampa, TX. 2. I was co-editor of my high school annual my senior year and a photographer all three years, winning a state award in sports photography. 3. I was president of my sophomore class at Frank Phillips College. 4. I lack three math courses at Texas Tech to complete a degree in math. 5. I was sales manager for a news company in Lubbock, Texas. 6. I was business manager for a news company in Fort Worth, Texas. 7. I attended a preaching training school (seminary) for two years. 8. I am a past president of Rotary Club. 9. My family and I lived in Wisconsin for two years where I preached for a small mission church. 10. I have traveled to New Zealand on a mission trip. NZ is a beautiful country. 11. I have one ace (hole-in-one) in golf (148 yard par 3). 1...Expand for more
2. My two children and their spouses are all in the education field in Texas. 13. My wife is a retired speech pathologist. She taught at Texas Tech for one year. 14. I use to jog, but now I mostly ride a bike or walk. 15. I conduct a memory class for those in a local nursing home. 16. I have five grandchildren. I love being their Papa. As of 2014 one is in college, three are in high school, and one is in middle school. 17. I met my wife Judith in freshman English class in college. Our instructor was my mother's high school English teacher. Judith and I have been married since 1965. 18. For several years I was a member of the McLennan County Sheriff's Department Pastoral Staff. 19. After living in parsonages for some 40 years, my wife and I finally bought our own home in 2013 here in Waco. 20. I preach funerals for those who do not have a church home or preacher. The funeral homes call me when they need someone to meet that need. 21. It makes me sad to conduct a funeral at the pauper's cemetery. 22. I have preached funerals with law enforcement officers on duty IN the funeral service and AT the cemetery. That's what happens when families are at war. 23. I have a hand written note on my desk that says "Do not regret growing older; it is a privilege denied to many." 24. I have performed CPR on two individuals; one died and the other lived. 25. I have contributed chapters to four different lectureship books, all dealing with religious themes. 26. During warm weather I play golf once a week. I shoot mostly on the plus side of ninety now. My best round has been a 77. 27. If you want to know anything else, just ask.

My mother died in 2002 at the age of 81. That is how old I will be on August 13! She is still remembered especially on Mother's Day.
It could work!
Judith and I have another great grandchild. The picture is of Parker and his two children. Enlarge the picture to see big brother helping his sister. Or is he doing something else? We are so happy for Parker and Melissa
This photo is from News 7 in Amarillo. It is looking toward Canadian. See the green Dinosaur on the right side of the picture.

This rose bush hangs on in spite of the weather.
And just like that it is Christmas once again!

For my music lovers out there.
Thanks to Tom Keener for SEASONS GREETINGS!
An oldie but goodie!
My view from the chapel. Very calming area in the midst of the pain, anxiety, and sometimes chaos in the hospital setting.
