Ernie's Story

Life I have lived in Spain since 1981, spending the first 12 years in Barcelona, and for the last ten I've been living 30 minutes up the coast in a town called Mataró. I got married at 36 with a lovely Catalan woman, Roser, and we have two beautiful boys, McKinley, who is five years old, and Dexter, four. I taught English as a Foreign Language (EFL) at universities, businesses, and schools for a dozen years, then twelve years ago my wife and I opened our own English school here in Mataró. (The irony of all this being that English and Spanish were far and away my worst subjects at DVHS--I guess you never know!) After finishing college and before finding myself in Spain (for what was to be a six-month stay!) I did quite a bit of traveling. I lived in...Expand for more
both New Zealand and Mexico for a year, and spent time on a few small Pacific Islands in between (Fiji, Western Samoa, and, my favorite, Tonga). In 1980, I went back to college to get my teaching credential and ended up doing my student teaching in Ireland. From there, I came down to Spain and the rest, as they say, is history. I spend most of my free time with my wife and kids. Other than that, my two passions are reading (T.C. Boyle, Richard Russo, Wendell Berry, Wallace Stegner, Philip Roth, Barry Unsworth, & Gore Vidal are among my favorites) and listening to music (blues & rock `n´ roll). Following the Giants via the internet, collecting books, and sitting over tapas and cervezas at local cafés fill up the rest of my time. March, 2003
