Esther's Story

This IS why I do not do things like this. For the third time¿ And I went by KATHY, not Esther. Finished high school with a great sense of relief. Went to Texas A&M. got two degrees Engineering technology ¿ graphics, and Civil Engineering structures, and danced a lot. Moved to California since the economy was slow, and worked in structural engineering for fifteen years, got my California licenses, worked on schools and hospitals mostly. Hiked, camped, started doing photography, and went four wheeling n the desert. Was the queen of structural steel, and the camping manager for my second firm in LA. And started wearing hats. After some serious nagging by a college friend I returned to Dallas, Texas in 2000. Worked for a structural there, but we had personality issues. Some say I had problems with authority. I think it had problems with me. Ran into an old college prof I had had a crush on and got married and moved to fifty acres outside of a very small town. And an unfinished house. Worked on and off for several years till 2006, in engineering, got my licenses here and then went to work for the aforementioned small town as the code enforcement officer (or beast, per my boss), building official, quiet zone coordinator ordinance writer, general do-what-no-one-else does, and lately, punching bag. It does not pay as well as structura...Expand for more
l engineering. I am known as the hat lady or sometimes that d___ hat lady. When I am not working too much, which is mostly, I do photography, hike, hack trails in my woods, work at my booth in an antiques shop, READ, or watch kung fu movies, anime, and/or football. We have three cats, a dog, and numerous raccoons, possums, owls, coyotes, and unfortunately feral hogs, but only the cats and dog are inside, thankfully. Never had kids, either of us. My husband is a rocket scientist. Most people who knew me in high school would not know me on the street. I was quiet, intense, a loner who did not fit in well, but tried. Tried to stay off the radar. Never volunteered. Now, I am not quiet particularly, especially when I feel strongly about something (I guess the intensity did not go away, just changed). Not exactly a loner any more, but I discovered in college that there were advantages to not fitting in, mostly the freedom to be yourself, and I do not bother trying any more. It is much more fun this way. To quote a good friend quoting Kipling: ¿The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. To be your own man (woman!) is a hard business. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.¿ The man knew his stuff.
