Eugene's Story

Life After receiving a degree in Biological Oceanography at UW, we (my wife Lorraine Charlton and son David) moved to Corvallis Oregon where I took a research position in oceanography at Oregon State University. Fieldwork took me from the tropics of Panama to the pack ice north of Alaska, while in the lab I focused on the biology and taxonomy of the polychaetous annelids ("sea worms" in real language). ming up in deep-sea core samples, a task that sounds disgustingly esoteric but was in actuality a great deal of fun. So much so that I left Battelle in 1991 to become a freelance taxonomist. Since that time I've been happily self-employed looking at marine fauna through the microscope and poking through lots of old musty scientific literature. Certainly haven't gotten rich doing this, but at least it's kept the lights on. My wife and I are now living on South Hill in Puyallup. There's a guest scope in the lab and cold beer in the icebox, so come visit!
