Eugenie's Story

Life Hi, all: Most of you Newington Class of '62 members will remember me as Genie Otis. The rest of you (former students)will probably remember me as Mrs. Langhorne. After high school I went to CCSC, graduating in 1966 with a BS/Business Education. I completed my MS/BE in 1979. I married Maurice Langhorne from our class in 1965. We were married for 22 years. Mo was in the Air Force during which time we lived in New York, Texas, and finally Fairbanks, Alaska where Scott was born in 1970 and where I taught for one year. Cindy came along in 1973 back in Connecticut. I taught high school in New York, Alaska and Connecticut for a total of 25 years, the last three in a Christian High School in Manchester, CT. However, most of my teaching career was in Enfield, CT. In 1987 I went through a painful, unexpected divorce. Currently I am living in Sandy Cove, Nova Scotia, a tiny fishing village--population, 150--with my new husband of just two years. My Dad was born on an island just 10 miles down the road, and my relatives abound in the area, including Sandy Cove. I am temporarily retired. HA! I am busier than ever before in my life. I would love to hear from old friends and classmates. Workplace After college graduation, I taught for two years (Business Education) at Bristol Eastern High School. Because Maurice was in the Air Force and was transferred to Syracuse, NY for a short time, I then taught at Liverpool High School in Liverpool, NY. After MO finished flight training in San Angelo, Texas we were sent to Fairbanks Alaska where I worked as Executive Secretary to the Dean of University Relations at the Fairbanks branch of the University of Alaska until my son was born in 1970. After that I substituted at Lathrop High School in Fairbanks eventually teaching there for one year before Mo was discharged from the Air Force in 1972. I then took almost five years off to raise (by then) my two children. Back to school again in 1976 teaching at Kosciuszko Jr. High in Enfield, CT where we were living. Transferred to Enrico Fermi High where I stayed for eight years before I was...Expand for more
moved to Enfield High for two years where I was exposed to chemicals and developed a severe and permanent case of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. Back to Fermi for my last year of public teaching before taking five years off for disability reasons. My last three years of teaching were at Cornerstone Christian School where I stayed until my remarriage in 2001. Am now enjoying a "busy" retirement here in Nova Scotia, but I may begin substituting in September of next year. I've had a wonderful teaching career, and "Classmates" helps me keep in touch with students from the past, including a student from my very first year of teaching. (Harvey, that's you!) I hope all of you found as satisfying a career as I did--thanks to the mentoring of Mrs. Dorothy Kelleher with whom I am still in touch, even after all these years. God Bless! Update as of January, 2011: My husband passed away in 2007 after just six years of marriage. I decided to stay in Nova Scotia where I had desired to live from the time I was 13 and first visited Sandy Cove. I am currently working as a substitute Program Support Assistant in the local schools and am thrilled to be back in the classroom again. And a note to any of my former students from Connecticut, New York or Alaska--I would so love to hear from you and find out what life has held in store for you. So don't be shy about writing. I always wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were right.. Take a nap in my recliner with the cat curled up in my lap. Mrs. Dorothy Keleher--the sweetest, kindest, most honest person you would ever want to meet. She is the one who inspired, aided, directed and encouraged me to become a teacher--the perfect profession for me. How does one adequately say "Thank You" to someone who so positively shaped your life?! My oldest friend is Helen Olsen Morris--and you don't want to know how we met. I would be too embarrassed to tell you, but it is a funny story. It just wasn't at the time. We have been friends since fifth grade--now more than 50 years.
