Eva's Story

Life I went to Europe on vacation after graduating from UNM in 1974. My intention was to stay for just a couple of months, look around, and then return to New Mexico to attend medical school. But I fell in love with a man in Hamburg, Germany, where I've been living ever since. What a contrast to New Mexico, up here in northern Europe! The winters are cold, wet, and dark; the summers are cool, wet and light. The 'wet' does have the distinct advantage of making everything green. Also in contrast to New Mexico, Germany is overpopulated (about the size of N.M., but 82 million people living in it), but pretty well organized. In 1974 there was still the wall dividing East and West Germany. I traveled to the East a number of times, got a first-hand chance to see socialism. I was grateful for the quirk of fate that, despite the fact that both my parents came from what later became East Germany, I was born in the West, thus able to live in freedom. It was exciting to see the wall fall in 1989, giving my friends in the East the opportunity to read whatever they wanted to, to travel where ever they wanted to, to say anything they wanted to without fearing to be put behind bars because of it. In the late seventies, after having somewhat committed myself to staying in Germany, it took me a while to figure out how to earn my keep, but fortunately I stumbled into data processing. After having worked for various companies...Expand for more
, in the early eighties I decided to become a self-employed IT consultant in the world of main frames. I am somewhat interested in politics, though I am not politically active. Because of my past in the U.S., my experiences in East Germany, and my present life in Europe, I can't help but to compare the systems and the impact they have on the lives of the people who live within them, as well as on the lives of the people in the rest of the world. In 1999 I was diagnosed with a rare lung disease, requiring the constant use of oxygen. I continued to work, but in 2001 things had deteriorated so far that work was no longer possible. Then the love of my life, Peter, died. In early 2003 I had a lung transplantation, which liberated my nose from the hose. I returned to work as a IT consultant in late 2003. Beginning in January 2007, my life took a new twist. I spent the better part of two years working in India. A whole new world! And a lot of food for thought. I wish my client would send me again - I had one last trip in 2010, and then the company decided that offshoring didn't quite cut the mustard. I've managed to fly to New Mexico at least once a year, except for two years that I missed because of my illness. I hope to make it more often again in the future. My brothers and sister are all still there, and I always look forward to seeing them. Thank goodness for Email for staying in touch in the meantime!
