Everett's Story

I graduated from DCHS in 1980 and moved to Phoenix, AZ for several years and decided at the ripe old age of 32 to attend college at the University of Tennessee. I received a Bachelors degree in Horticulture and Landscape Design. I owned and operated a Garden Design Center for several years and sold to move to Ft Lauderdale, FL. I moved back to Dickson in 2005 to help with my ailing Mom, who has since passed. I work for the Lowe's Company as a plant buyer and garden center manager. It has been nice to run into some of my old friends. I find it strange that many of them are grandparents now. My clock must not have been on the same schedule! Many of the people that I have reconnected with has been through friends of my brothers and sisters; Teressa Garrett(passed in 1999), Cindy Brown(Garrett)owner of Cindy's Cafe on Hwy 46, Edwin(Binky)Garrett, Ernest Garrett, and Kim Wilson(Garrett). I am especially glad to have run into my friend Angie Richardson. I even see Ms. Atteberry(Hernandez, for you younger guys and gals) at Lowe's at times. Many of you may remember my friend Greg Stuart. Sadly,he passed several years ago. It is good to be home. Say "HI" if you get the chance. I always wanted to be a horticulturist when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. As it turns out, they were not even my family. I ordered them from FLEMCO.. To blow off steam, I grab my shovel and wheelbarrow and head into my garden or jump in my Jeep, top down, music up and ride. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have plant specs, land analysis, and M&M's to be able to deal with the day-to-day. My inspiration came from and still comes from my Mom. She passed away in Oct of 2006 at the young age of 63. She knew the incredible impact she had on my life. I told her many times. My Mom was the truest, dearest friend I ever had. She could round up strength and courage and wisdom, even in the darkest of hours, when all seemed hopeless. My Mom taught me to be me. She taught me to love my friends and family, to fight like hell for the things in which I believe, take a stand, and never leave a needy person in need. She told me to throw my spirit high into the air and follow it wherever it led me; and to enjoy the journey. She told me that I had a heart and a mind, and that I should give a piece of each freely when deemed necessary. She'd say, "Stand tall, be respectful, be truthful, and don't apologize for being you. ....what a great lady and an amazingly insightful human. ..love you, Mama. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Angie Richardson, because we had the best times!! And because she ...Expand for more
turned into an awesome woman.. Hmm..my obsessions? Hell, this would take me weeks to share. Well, I am an AVID gardener. Digging in the soil and getting sweaty and dirty is my therapy. That is the time and place I connect with my life energy. That is when I am at peace. The Earth and it's riches have always inspired me. I bleed ORANGE! Rock on Vols AND Lady Vols!! Ok, now for my nerdy obsessions... Hi, my name is Ed, and I am a plantaholic! I collect, plant, propagate, breed, and LOVE plants...from the mightiest Metasequoia glyptostroboides to the showiest Chaemacyparis pissifera fillifera aurea, to the most overated Pyrus calleryana...I love plants! .... anyone want to trade cuttings, or seeds, or .... Life's biggest surprise.... growing up in a large family with modest means, I always wanted to be RICH when I grew up. The surprise: I was already rich. I just didn't recognize the value of my life and my family. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel the entire thing and add on a greenhouse. My dream home would be a cottage looking out over rolling green wheat fields and a sea of peonies and ruellia, and redbuds and sweetgums, and............... . ....the teacher I'd most like to see again.. Miss Hernandez. Why? I'd like to tell her she had a big impact on my life. And I thank her for that. If I won $100 million, I'd give 99 million of it to the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Research Center, then spend the rest on Carharts, my family and traveling to photograph the world's most beautiful gardens.. Greek Life... Gamma Beta Phi Vice President, 3 years, UTK,YADA, YADA, YADA... Trophies!! NERD ALERT!!!! I once represented the state of TN in a National Collegiate Plant Identification "Bee", for the lack of a better word. ....50 students, 50 states, 1000 leaf, or twig or bloom, or root specimens. The rules; name as many as you can, listing them using the Latin Linaeus binomenclature including cultivated variety. Spelling counts. GO! 8 hours later, I had a Migraine, and 998 correct. The state of TN won. PLEASE will somebody pat me on the back. I need a break. My arm is tired! My ONE do over? I would go back to Oct. 10, 2006 and say, "I LOVE YOU", one more time. In 10 years, I hope to be ALIVE!!. I'm going to get there by EATING CHOCOLATE AND SMOKING MY FAVORITE CIGAR EVERYDAY! What one thing about me would surprise everyone at our High School Reunion? Hmmmm, The fact that I am entitled to attend a High School Reunion! My first job was at Lomghorn Steak, where I got paid $5 a night to bus tables and wash to bus tables and wash dishws. What I remember most about it is How much fun Angie Richardson.
