Fillmore's Story

Life I now live in Corona del Mar (Newport Beach) California with the woman (Sharon) I married in 1972 (one year after I graduated from Harvard Law School). Our plan is to remain here as long as we live. ***** After a 6-year stretch of being thoroughly over-worked at a large Wall Street law firm, I switched to being in-house counsel, first with Olin Corporation in Stamford CT, and later for 16 years with ARCO Petroleum in Southern California. I received a parachute pension from ARCO in 1995 as part of one of their periodic down-sizing reorganizations, and for a time considered myself to be semi-retired, working intermittently on projects for various large companies between taking breaks. Then, in 2001, BP (British Petroleum), the company that bought ARCO two years before, asked if I would be willing to return and I accepted the position of Vice President, managing their Western real estate legal services group. Then in 2006, I again was offered a retirement package (since BP does not willingly employ any executives over 60), which I gladly accepted. This time, I plan for my retirement to be permanent. Turning 60 was the first birthday that I’ve had in a long time that I really appreciated, since it tied into my permanent retirement and freedom at last to do as I chose with my days. ***** After 20 years in California, we have finally moved to a house that overlooks the ocean. We never had children because we were both too consumed with our careers and business travel (yuck!) and sports and sports travel (yeah!). I no longer do any running. Our principal sports now are long-distance bicycling and tennis. We have taken many long bicycling tours, including from Paris across the Pyrenees to Northwestern Spain, from Burgundy France across the Alps and Apennines to Venice Italy, and from Los Angeles to Texas. Our 25th anniversary gifts to each other were a pair of custom titanium touring bicycles. By contrast, our tennis skills were definitely always "...Expand for more
club level", but have provided a lot of fun. Now that I’m retired and have more time, I’ve added weightlifting back into my exercise regime. And I am very happy to report that we still are able to handle multi-week trips on our bicycles, most recently in Southern Italy. ***** I have also become very active in the world of opera administration and philanthropy. For the last six years, I have been a Vice Chairman of Opera Pacific, one of the Tier 1 (top 15) opera companies in the US. I'm also a Patron of Los Angeles Opera and an Ambassador Trustee with Opera America, an organization that serves all North American Opera companies. The various committees and boards on which I serve take up a considerable portion of my time. And, of course, Sharon and I also attend many performances of the opera companies with which we are affiliated and others in Europe and America. Many of our social activities revolve around opera related gatherings. ***** Sharon is still working as the Assistant City Manager of Newport Beach. And so, for now, I still have to schedule our leisure travel around a work schedule. ***** I am also happy to report that the serious bout of cancer that I suffered through from 2001 through 2004 was finally cured (or at least rendered dormant), and I’ve now been cancer-free for three years. In the aftermath, I don't expect to return to bicycling the higher mountains or any more 100+ mile days, but we are again able to do annual 500 mile/10 day bicycle expeditions. Workplace Cravath, Swaine & Moore (Wall Street Law Firm) 1971-77. Olin Corporation (large conglomerate), Stamford CT. 1977-79. Legal Department. ARCO/British Petroleum, Southern California. Law and business departments in the gasoline domestic retail part of the company's business. Interrupted for six years, during which I worked for several other companies in California, Florida and Nevada. Returned to BP as a Vice President in 2001. Retired in 2006.
