John's Story

Life My Spouse We worked for the same company. My Pets None at the moment My Job I work for the Suffolk County (N.Y.) Police Department. The ninth largest police department in the country, as an electrician/electrical technician. I helped maintain the departments radio communications system, remote tower site buildings, emergency power sytems and controls. Our police district covers 954 sq miles with over 2000 members protecting over 1 million residents daily. I have over 20 years service and I'm looking forward to retiring soon. I've survived two life threatning illness's, for this I am very grateful ! UPDATE:.....In June of 2010 I retired from the Suffolk County Police Department after 25 years total service. This completes my 47 year working career and although many dream of retirement it's a major life changing decision. Gone is the all important pay check, the commraderie of work mates, the feeling of accomplishment and belonging to group of problem solving people on a daily basis. On the bright side, I no longer rise at 5:30 am Monday through Friday, commute 30 miles to police headquarters on the now treacherous Long Island Expressway, and then drive an average of 125 miles a day visiting different work sites in Suffolk County. My back and knees no longer ache as much as they did when working and I am no longer exposed to arrestee's and the diseases they may carry. I have no plans to leave Huntington, I am a New Yorker, I hate the heat, and Hurricanes are bad for you. In the mean time I am doing much needed work on my 90 year old house, and enjoying my hobby's. In the Summer fishing on Long Island Sound with my brother in law. High School seems like dream, after all it was over 50 years ago ! Regards... 8 years since I retired from SCPD and I cannot complain. My health is decent, I do exactly what I want each day. My wife Barbara retired 2 yrs ago from a stressful corporate job she does not miss at all. Nothing else has changed, I live in the same house in Huntington which has become a very expensive go to place for young professionals who work in NYC. Many new expensive apartment houses have been built over the last two years here in Huntington Village to house "empty nesters" singles and couples. The rents are $3000-4000 month, and they are completely occupied. New York City and it's high paying jobs have pretty much saved Long Island from becoming a ghost town when the Defense industry jobs went away in the early 1980's. I do get to Levittown quite often to my Mother-in-Law's house. She's 90 and showing no signs of slowing down. The old neighborhood has changed quite a bit some of the houses are no longer recognizable as a standard Levitt. The average price of a Levitt home is around $325,000. Taxes run anywhere from $6000-9000 yr depending on house-lot size. I'll be 73 in December, hard to believe, but I don't feel my age and remain quite active with different activities and hobby's. Regards, Jack Fisher '63 To all those who have stopped by it's nice to know so many of you are doing well. Last December 21 I turned 77 and although I have had a few health issues along the way I'm generally in good health and active in retirement. We still live in Huntington in the same house since 1977. No plans to leave Long Island. I keep active with hobbies and volunteer work. In the Summer I attend local Car Shows with my 2009 Corvette Stingray. I wish the best of everything to each and every one of you, Has it really been 60 years since we graduated LMHS? Regards, John
