Florence's Story

First, I was THRILLED to scroll the list and find several names who are connected to VERY special memories of mine during those most fascinating developmental years as a Hilltopper! I must say one of my FONDEST memories involves trips to the Shakespeare Theatre in Connecticut. I LAUGH at the pictures of us "all dolled up" as we queued up for the buses. And of course, there is ALWAYS Sister Charlotte who had the most profound effect upon my evolution as an English teacher...particularly when I taught Julius Caesar. The first day at college in New Paltz, NY, I met the man I chased until he caught me. We married my sophomore year, 1964 and have drifted along since then enjoying dealing with the curves life brings. He taught geology and Earth science at Newburgh Free Academy from 1966 till he retired in 1998. I taught secondary English in the same district and served my last 20 years at the high school, retiring in 2001. Over the years we have traveled throughout the US, and after retiring enjoyed using London as the center for our travels since our older daughter and her husband were living there for 5 years. When they moved to Canada, we changed our center of operation, but it was NOT as thrilling to say the least. We HOPE to get back to touring in Europe, but since we watch our 2 older grandchildren after school and during most of the summer, it IS difficult to arrange. We particularly enjoy visiting friends who have moved to VACATION RESORT AREAS and c...Expand for more
ontinue to learn about this beautiful country. Hopefully, the dollar will become stronger and we will be able to visit my family members who are still living in Poland. It has always been my hope to visit the farm that was the source for all my Father's charming stories from his youth. AND, it is STILL in the possession of his family! Jeff and I have lived in Newburgh the whole time since graduating from college, and can't consider moving although we enjoy sharing a weekend home in the Hamptons with our older daughter and her husband. We have 2 daughters: Brigitte is 35 and JUST had her first child in March named Zelda...she developed a STRONG interest in F.Scott Fitzgerald first, and then his wife Zelda...hence the name. She met her husband, who is a native of Toronto, in NYC where she worked as a hair colorist for John Sahag on Madison Avenue. She has followed him around the world thanks to his banking career, and they just moved back to Manhattan a year ago to our delight. Julianne is 30 and the mother of Elise who will be 12 in December, and Jay who will be 8 in September. She is an accountant and married to a diesel mechanic who live about 5 miles north of us here in the glorious Mid Hudson Valley. ONE dream was that I would become a "silver fox' like my Father; however, my hair has refused to grey in a PROPER manner, so I am a bottle blonde these days. Still hoping... I look forward to hearing from some of you in the not too distant future.
