Frances's Story

Life Hard to believe it's been 30 years since high school, isn't it? A little while after graduation, I started court reporting school and began working as a court reporter in the early 80's, eventually settling into the Pomona Superior Court. During my 18 years there, I worked in various department - divorce, criminal, and civil - and I worked with a lot of wonderful people. (I also saw some of my classmates on various occasions, and not all of you were in the jury box :0;) In 1985, I married Ricky Reyes and we lived in San Dimas for almost ten years. We did a lot of traveling and have some wonderful memories - motorcycling cross country and parasailing in Mexico stand out as some of my favorites - but then we started a family and spent a lot of time camping in a motorhome instead. We now have three teenage girls, the eldest of whom is graduating this year. In 1996, I moved to Upland, where I currently live. However, in 2001, my life changed; during what was supposed to be a routine operation, something went wrong and I was without oxygen for about five minutes. I was in a coma and on life support, and as a result, I lost my vision and some of my motor skills, but I have come a long way since then. After six years of various ...Expand for more
physical and speech therapies, I pretty much feel like myself, except I don't work (which is a shame, because I really loved my job). During my recovery period, my contact was limited to close friends and family, but now I'm comfortable sharing this with anyone who knew me before. Still, this injury has made me "see" things totally differently; it helped me to focus on what's really important in life and how kind people can be. (Unfortunately, I've also had to accept the fact that some people have a difficult time approaching me because they don't know what to expect, even though my physical appearance hasn't changed. I'm still the same person inside as I ever was - good and bad!) I fully anticipate a COMPLETE recovery, but until then . . . only God knows. Aside from attending church and supervising my girls ("directing traffic" as I call it), I fill my days with exercise and mental stimulation by reading literature via books on tape. (I never had time to read before, so this is an easy way to catch up on the classics.) My parents still live in San Dimas; they are my biggest encouragement, and I'm blessed to see them often. If there's one thing I've learned in life, you can always count on your faith, family, and friends.
