Francis's Story

I grew up in Hyde Park and attended FDR HS until the 11th grade. My mother remarried and we moved to Poughkeepsie. I wanted to get my degree from Roosevelt but the commute was longer than going to DCC so I finished my senior year at Roosevelt by starting my college experience. I ended up transferring to Tri-State University in Angola, IN and completed my BS in Aerospace Engineering in 84. I wandered the US for three years before I entered the US Air Force in 1987 as a navigator trainee. I ended up getting headaches from flying, so the USAF in its wisdom sent me to Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque, NM to work at what was then called the Air Force Weapons Laboratory. I spent three and a half years there, got married to someone who had two children from a previous marriage, and then was assigned to a program called Education With Industry. My EWI experience was with Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Engines located in East Hartford, CT. I was at P&W for ten months before I was assigned to Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, OH. I spent four years there working in two different aircraft program offices before I was assigned to teach at the Officer's Training School at Maxwell AFB in Montgomery, AL. I had a few different jobs while at Maxwell AFB and then transferred back to WP AFB to teach at the Air Force Institute of Technology. Teaching was great and I did some interesting and unique things while there. I spent three years at AFIT and then transferred down to the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center at Robins AFB in Warner Robins, GA. My final assignment in the USAF was back at Kirtland AFB where I worked at the Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center as a test director. I retired from the USAF in 2007 with 20 years of service as a Major and went to work for B/E Aerospace in Marysville, WA. This was an eye opener in may ways, especially in how beautiful the Seattle area is. I'm sure you've heard it rains up there all the time but that isn't true. The rainy season is from October through May and then it's dry from May through September. Most of the rain that did occur was at night and there are very few thunderstorms in the Seattle area. The view of the mountains is spectacular and Mt Rain...Expand for more
ier is just south of Seattle. The Puget Sound which Seattle surrounds is a joy to be out on, such as on a ferry going from one side of Seattle to the other, or to just sit in a water side restaurant and enjoy the boat traffic. 2008 wasn't the best year we've seen recently as far as the economy is concerned and I was able to get a job in WV before the housing and bank mess hit. I didn't last long in WV as I just didn't fit in, so I looked for a job in Dayton and returned here in late 2009. I returned here because my wife and I bought a house here in 1992 when we first were assigned here and held onto the house since. Life since Roosevelt has been a series of ups and downs. My youngest son is 13 and wants to be a Green Beret. I guess that's what I get for being in the military and letting him watch Star Wars. My daughter, whom I adopted in 1994, died from an accidental prescription overdose three weeks ago. Her three children live here with my wife and son and we're all one big family. My oldest son, whom I also adopted in 1994, lives in KY and is an electrician. He has one son from his first marriage and is doing well. There are times when I miss Hyde Park and there also are times when I'm glad I left. I enjoyed the ability to run around as a kid in the woods and not have to worry about trespassing on someone else's property. I enjoyed the ability to go out for long distance runs on the back roads and not have to worry about getting run over, well sort of, or having to check the intersection before crossing. Hyde Park is such a historic town and as such is also stuck in the past. I always felt there was more to the world out there than Hyde Park and tried at every opportunity to go out and explore it. That's probably where my desire to go into the military came from. For those of you reading this and don't remember me, I was definitely one of the nerds who ran winter and spring track for my sophmore and junior years and cross country in my junior year. Otherwise than that, I was pretty much invisible. I'm now working on my next transition in life. I've accepted a position in Washington, DC and am working out all of the paperwork before I leave. So, for now, this is where I stand.
